This is such sad news. Nottinghamshire is one of the realms we will be hosting at Echoes of Lore next spring and is close to our hearts…

Sherwood Forest’s famous Major Oak failed to produce new leaves this spring, leading experts to conclude that the ancient giant has reached the end of its life. With a massive 92 foot canopy and a 36 foot trunk circumference, it was one of Britain’s largest and most iconic trees.

Although there is no medieval evidence that Robin Hood actually hid inside the Major Oak, the tree has been linked to the legend for centuries and became a symbol of the outlaw’s story. Conservationists say decades of heavy tourism, compacted soil, and a series of extreme hot, dry summers accelerated its decline.

The Major Oak will remain standing as a natural monument, and thanks to saplings grown from its acorns, its legacy will continue for generations to come.
