On Friday, May 29th, the Coeur d'Alene Rotary club held its annual grant award celebration. Sunrise Rotary received a $4,000 grant for our project to purchase pediatric dental equipment for a new dental clinic at the Heritage Health Center for Healthy Living. It's always a pleasure to have Chuck Ethridge, the Executive Artistic Director of Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre (CST), at Sunrise Rotary. He was introduced by fellow Rotarian LaDonna Beaumont, former president of the CST board. Chuck explained that cities that invest in the arts and culture become destination communities for individuals and families. In 2025, the economic impact of theater in our area was $13.2 million. CST will offer three productions this year, including Frozen, Come From Away, and Titanic the Musical. https://cstidaho.com

Last Month, Sunrise Rotarians participated in a Rotary Epic Day of Service at TESH.
Staff members Veronica Klein, Shelby Walsh and Romona Morris were thrilled to have so many helping hands.
The mission of TESH is to provide choices and opportunities to children and adults with disabilities. They are always looking for volunteers, and we were happy to offer our assistance with some housekeeping chores that could be done on the weekend. A local couple, Patrick and Michelle Marshall, joined our work crew, and we invited them to visit Sunrise Rotary!

Sunrise Rotarians Mike Beck, Jeff Conroy, Karen Cook, Chris Dallenbach, Isaac Edwards, Ada Loper, Jerome Pollos, Jessicca Rude, Peter Smith, and Troy Tymesen spent a couple of hours moving furniture and sprucing up the landscaping by pulling weeds and trimming shrubs on the TESH campus.
The Rotary sponsored Epic Day of Service website, tracked Rotary projects across the globe on or around May 16th. Our Rotary district encouraged clubs to register and post information on their service projects.

We have had an informative and exciting month centered around important environmental aspects and locations in our region at the Rotary Club of Coeur d'Alene Sunrise. We ended the month of April with Jenny Gray, Aquifer Protection Program Coordinator for the Panhandle Health District, as she presented on the Spokane Valley–Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. Covering approximately 370 square miles, the aquifer was formed by ancient floods. It was designated a “sole source aquifer” in 1998 and a “sensitive resource aquifer” in 1997, indicating its vulnerability to surface contaminants. The Spokane River serves as its primary source.
The Panhandle Health District has implemented a prevention-based approach and collaborates with agencies such as the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to support continued protection efforts. (photo of Jenny and Chris: Jessicca Rude)

Then we opened up May with Tom & Kirste Richards sharing the history of land purchased by the Richards family in 1920, and now protected by a conservation easement with Inland Northwest Land Conservancy (INLC). INLC protects private lands through legal agreements with landowners. Their website says, "Using a science-based approach, we’ve pinpointed the places that matter most - landscapes rich in ecological value and facing the biggest threats." The Richards' property includes acres of rich natural habitat behind the d**e, and is a feeder to the aquifer from Hayden Lake. Great family and community story!

What an informative meeting we had on Tuesday!

Dene' Joubert, the Senior Investigations Manager for the Better Business Bureau, outlined the various types of scams that target businesses and individuals, and strategies for identifying and avoiding them. Scamming is a billion-dollar industry that targets victims via email, social media, and text messaging apps. Besides losing money, victims face the hidden costs of mental health impact - anger, loss of trust, anxiety and shame. Visit the BBB website and use their Scam Tracker to report a scam; search scams; and protect yourself and others.
