December 7, 1941, may have been “a date which will live in infamy” for President Roosevelt, but it was the beginning of all kinds of strange and scary events for a four-year-old. The wailing sirens and darkness of blackout drills stand out in my mind....

ROUND ENGINES

In dreams of airplanes I have flown, The engines are still round. Radial engines' throaty roars, Oh, how I loved that sound. Memories of cockpit smells, Invade my restless sleep. Of engine oil and pilot sweat, Mementos I still keep. A turbo jet has none of that, It screams a high-pitched amp. Its smell is that of kerosene, Much like a Boy Scout’s lamp....

Growing Up

Grown From Seeds, Be They Ever So Humble, I Still Love My Avocado Trees When I was young, about age three, I sat on a limb, in Grandmother’s tree, And picked avocados, And ate them. Nobody told me, I shouldn’t like them. I stood by a fence, when I was four, Watching truck farmers, on the other side, Hoe the field,...

Silicon Valley Goodbye

A Half Century of Progress? (Note the same mountains in the background) When the ancients wrote of the Garden of Eden, they may well have used California’s Santa Clara Valley as their model. “And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food ….” Genesis 2:9. Or so it seemed until an enigma called Silicon Valley took root....

Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE), 1958

I wanted none of the Resistance part of SERE Unmerciful sun beat down on the mountainside. A helicopter plucked a sunstroke victim off a shale ledge and flew away. We kept a slow, steady pace. None of us wanted to be the guy on the helicopter. The Korean War was history. Few Americans had even heard of Vietnam. Peace ruled the land in the late 1950s....

War’s End

Wagontire, Oregon, Circa 2012 The end of World War II in 1945 brought many changes to the home front. Germany surrendered in May. In August, the world's first atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Japan gave up. Living in the farmlands of the Sacramento Valley, I do not remember a lot about the celebrations that took place....
