Five years of planning. One race in '21 that got canceled. One attempt in '23 that ended with a broken boat 80% of the way to Alaska

What does success look like when the finish line moves out of reach?

In 2023, Team Dogsmile Adventures attempted the Race to Alaska — 750 miles from Port Townsend to Ketchikan, with no engine and no support. They made it 80% of the way before their boat broke in the Grenville Channel, and that was the end of their race.

But success isn't about winning. It's about what it means to try a hard thing. And why some adventures are worth doing even when they don't end the way you planned.

The 2026 race starts June 14 and we have your next movie night. Get ready by watching the 2023 story first: https://youtu.be/NLRX91Eq37w

Two reasons we're sailing 750 miles to Alaska.
Jon Totten, founder of Dogsmile Adventures, on why Team Dogsmile is going back to the Race to Alaska in 2026 — and what this race is really about.

The Race to Alaska starts June 14. Four guys from North Idaho. One trimaran. 750 miles of open coastline. No engine, no support boats, no shortcuts.

We chose this water. The people who sail with us at Dogsmile didn't choose theirs.

On June 14, four of us will start sailing 750 miles to Alaska — no engine, no support, no shortcuts.

But this race isn't about the miles. It's about the people back home in North Idaho who carry more than most, and who find something on the water that they can't find anywhere else.

Four guys from North Idaho. 750 miles to Alaska. No engine.
But this race isn't about the miles.

Dogsmile Adventures takes people sailing who carry more than most — veterans, youth navigating loss, people rebuilding after addiction, illness, and violence. A few hours on the water can shift something.

They didn't choose their hard waters. We chose ours.
On June 14, we sail for them.

The crane is booked. The paint is coming. And it's all because of you. 🎨⛵

Six years of believing in something before the world catches up — that's Jon. That's Dogsmile.

This week, you caught up. And then some.

Thank you for giving, sharing, and showing up for the veterans, youth, adaptive sailors, and families who step onto this boat. Watch Jon's message above — it says the rest better than we ever could.

The hull is getting painted. The mission continues. 🐶💙
