Starting in 1894, W.E.B. Du Bois taught at Ohio's Wilberforce University, the nation’s first private historically Black university.

It was at Wilberforce that Du Bois finished his doctoral thesis, "The Suppression of the African Slave Trade to the United States of America, 1638–1870.”
