📖 Welcome back to Terminology Tuesday, where we break down the language of architecture one word at a time. Let’s return to the classical column styles, and today we’ll cover Ionic. 𝐈𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐬 feature scroll-like capitals (the top of the column). Some Cincinnati churches, civic buildings, and banks from the 19th century include Ionic columns on their façades. Every historic building has a story, and we love helping uncover it!

Cincinnati Preservation Executive Director Beth Johnson once again joined WVXU’s Bill Rinehart for “OKI Wanna Know” to help answer a listener’s question, this time about the Warner Brothers distribution center in Over the Rhine.

We love working with WVXU to share the stories behind the places that make Cincinnati special. And we love that listeners are so interested in our unique architecture and rich history. That curiosity helps build appreciation for the places and stories worth preserving.

Cemetery Cleanup Workshop Canceled

Our cemetery cleanup workshop scheduled for Sunday, October 18, at 1 p.m. at United Colored American Cemetery has been canceled. Cold temperatures will leave the headstones too cold for the cleaning solution to work properly.

We’ll work to schedule another cleanup opportunity in the spring, when both the weather and the stones are warmer.

In the meantime, we encourage you to visit United Colored American Cemetery, enjoy its beautiful landscape, and reflect on the lives and stories represented there.

Thank you for your understanding and willingness to help care for this historic place. Stay tuned for a spring cleanup date!

📖 Terminology Tuesday is your weekly architecture vocabulary lesson. A 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐦 is a horizontal window above a door. The transom window can often be opened as part of the air circulation system in the building. Many 19th Cincinnati commercial buildings and historic homes have transoms above their recessed storefronts. Even here at Cincinnati Preservation’s Hauck House in the West End, we have transom windows above some of the doorways. Photo by Phil Armstrong (tag )

The Wyandot Removal Trail is a series of historical markers through Ohio commemorating the removal of the Wyandot in 1843. The markers identify locations of Wyandot campsites during this journey and are collaboratively written by the Cultural Division of Wyandotte Nation and UC students and faculty.

The Lebanon marker is located in Cedar City Park and was the last city the Wyandot passed through before their final encampment in Sharonville.

The Noth Bend marker is located in William Henry Harrison Riverfront Park, where the Wyandots, now traveling on steamboats, paused to bid farewell to their Ohio homelands.
