Well, guess the ... cat's ... out of the bag ...

Neighborhood Cat Advocates is so very proud to share that we have officially spayed & neutered our 20,000th free-roaming cat!!

This is HUGE!!

Why? Let's look at some math, shall we? 

One female cat can get pregnant at 4 months of age.
She can have an average of 2-3 litters per year.
Take half of that, you have the litters that survived.
Take half of that, you have an approximate amount of female survivors.
Then you multiply that using the same formula above.

It's a very simple (?) way of saying, the number of kittens NOT being born as a result of spaying and neutering 20,000 cats is literally in the billions.

Billions.

Let that sink in.

By taking all of these females out of the dating pool, NCA (and other like-minded groups in Butte County, like FUR and TOP Cats) we have drastically reduced the number of kittens being born outdoors. Yes, there are still kittens being born, because there are still people out there not spaying and neutering, and giving away "free" kittens, but we hate to think what Butte County would be like without groups like ours doing the boots-on-the-ground work. 

In 2023, we opened PawPrints Spay/Neuter Clinic, a spay/neuter designated for free-roaming cats only. Since opening, we've altered more than 4,000 cats. We're able to assist other groups like FUR-Friends United in Rescue, Inc and TOPCats on the Ridge by providing low-cost spays and neuters so they can also get out there and do the important work they want to do. We love being able to help others, help others!

Your money is important to you right now. We totally get it. But, donating to smaller animal rescue groups like ours means your dollar goes even farther, because we don't pay an Executive Director a big salary. We don't spend our money on bells and whistles. When it comes to actually making a difference, groups like ours come out on top. Please consider directing your hard-earned dollars to animal groups that are actually making a lasting impact in this community. This is critical and impactful work, and we truly cannot do it without you!

In case you missed it, over the last five days we've been sharing the Top 5 reasons people don't think they can or should foster animals. Our hope has been that we've encouraged people who may not have considered fostering, or maybe they have considered it but don't think they can.

Today is day five, the final day in this series. Our final myth is one of the toughest ones, because it happens all the time. Making this one not a myth, but not 100% reality, either.

Myth #5: I will get attached!

Yep. Not a myth. We've all done it. "Foster Fails." You do get attached, it's true. It's inevitable. The more you foster kittens, the higher the chances of you not being able to let one go.

Guess what? It's not the end of the world. Sure, that's one less kitten you can foster in the long run, but that's also one less adoption for us to worry about.

Keeping one doesn't mean you can't foster ever again. It might limit you a tiny bit, but having cats makes it easier to raise kittens to get adopted out to homes with other cats. Win-win!

We would, of course, rather you don't keep them all, but we get it. They're cute. But the resistance to fostering because of the fear of keeping one is something you should really reconsider.

Our hope is to encourage people who may not have considered fostering, or maybe they have considered it but don't think they can. Let's dispel those myths together!

Myth #4: I already have animals!

Great! If you have dogs that get along with cats, awesome! If you have other cats that don't mind newcomers, even better!

As long as introductions are handled respectfully, we welcome foster homes that already have animals.

You might have guessed why ... Because it makes our cats and kittens even more adoptable! Kittens that grow up around other animals (including kids) have more permanent outcomes than kittens that don't.

That doesn't mean we don't want to place kittens in foster homes without the other animals (looking at you, single lads and lasses). Invite your friends over to help socialize them. Or don't. Keep them all to yourself. We get it.

Myth #3: I'm too busy!

This is a tough one, because most people work, have kids, have homes and cars to maintain, kids with extracurricular activities, etc. We get it.

But listen to this: are you home, ever? Are you paying rent or a mortgage on a home that you are never at? The answer to that is probably no. You are probably home many hours a day, you just don't realize it. Think about the things you do at home. Watching TV, playing video games, cooking, cleaning, helping the kids with homework, whatever. But you're home, and that's all we need.

Kittens need to be fed, watered, and played with. That's it. You don't need to spend 18 hours a day with them. They literally just need a safe place to grow up and become the kittens they were meant to be.

If you have just a few hours per week to spare, and space in your home for kittens to run around and play and be their cute little selves, then consider becoming a foster home. We absolutely need you.

ALL HANDS ON DECK! This is what we do. We come together for the sake of the helpless who didn’t get to choose. 10 kittens. 7 humans. Flea baths. Heat and comfort. Food. Medication. Vaccines. One tiny little girl who we absolutely didn’t believe would make it through the night!

We have hit a road block. We need fosters! We simply cannot continue to prevent the suffering without your help! Please fill out a foster application even if it’s only been a consideration. Someone from our team will reach out to you and answer any questions or concerns you may have!

Myth #2: It's too expensive!

Guess what? You don't have to pay for ANYTHING. If you sign up to foster for us, we provide everything growing kittens need, such as litter boxes and litter, litter scoops, toys, beds or cubbies, kitten food (or kitten milk + bottles/nipples), food and water bowls, treats, and most importantly, flea treatment, vaccines, and de-wormers.

We can also provide play pens, panels, baby gates ... whatever you may need to foster and raise kittens successfully. We provide literally everything!

You are, of course, free to buy your own things if you choose, but right out the gate you will have what you need. All we need from you is your time, space in your home, and all the love and play time you can manage.

Fostering cats and kittens is so critical for the work we do. Without foster homes, we have no choice but to leave kittens outside where they may not ever be socialized. And, who needs more cats outdoors?! Kittens eventually become adult cats, and we all know what adult cats do ... they make more kittens!
