CSU Chico Upward Bound Projects Helping low-income and first-generation students go to college.

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's deg

ree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

The impact of Upward Bound is made possible by the incredible people behind the program.

This week, we’re thankful for Karissa Lozier, Fiscal Administrator, whose favorite memories come from watching students proudly showcase the projects they’ve poured their hearts into, and Diana Thao, Former Advisor, who treasures seeing students transform into confident young adults throughout their Upward Bound journey.

Alumni Spotlight ✨

The impact of Upward Bound extends far beyond high school graduation. Today, we’re celebrating four incredible alumni who are continuing to pursue their dreams in higher education.

From UCLA and UC Santa Barbara to Chico State, these students are studying a variety of fields, including Political Science, Psychological Sciences, Film & Media Studies, and Nursing. Their journeys are a testament to the hard work, perseverance, and determination that define the Upward Bound community.

Our Annual Upward Bound Career Fair was a tremendous success, and it would not have been possible without the professionals, community members, and Upward Bound alumni who generously volunteered their time to share their experiences with our students.

Thank you for inspiring our students, answering their questions, and helping them explore the many educational and career pathways available to them. Opportunities like these allow students to connect with individuals working in fields they are passionate about, helping them envision their future goals and the steps needed to achieve them.

A special thank you to our Upward Bound alumni who returned to give back to the program that helped shape their own journeys. Your stories are a powerful reminder of what is possible through hard work, perseverance, and education.

Where Are They Now Wednesday 🌟

The impact of Upward Bound extends far beyond high school graduation.

Today we’re highlighting three incredible alumni whose journeys reflect the power of education, perseverance, and community:

🎓 Edgar Daniel Cruz (Class of 2020) – PhD Candidate pursuing his doctorate in Cellular and Molecular Biology.

🎓 Brittany Rubio (Class of 2006) – Senior Program Coordinator and proud Chico State graduate.

🎓 Johanna Wiltse (Class of 2018) – Apprenticeship Office Manager for the Ironworkers Union and Chico State alumna.

From FAFSA workshops and summer programs to lifelong friendships and finding community, each of these alumni credits Upward Bound with helping them navigate college and discover opportunities beyond what they imagined possible.

Their stories remind us that success takes many forms, but access, support, and belonging can make all the difference.
