What can human cells reveal about the developing brain that animal models may miss?

Research led by former IFER Graduate Fellow Claudia Nguyen has been published in Science. Using human stem cell-derived assembloids, Nguyen and her UCLA colleagues uncovered an early interaction between two developing brain regions that influences the types of neurons produced in the cerebral cortex.

The findings demonstrate how human-relevant research methods can advance our understanding of human biology while reducing reliance on animals.

A big win for animals and for our movement.

The FDA has issued a new rule clarifying that non-animal methods can be used, when appropriate, to evaluate the safety of drugs and biological products before human trials.

By replacing terms like “animal tests” and “animal studies” with broader language, the FDA is removing the outdated assumption that animals must be used in human drug development. This creates more room for human-relevant approaches such as organs-on-chips, human cell-based models and computational methods.

The rule does not end animal testing, but it marks meaningful progress toward a future in which animals are no longer made to suffer for biomedical research.

This victory belongs to every advocate and supporter who has demanded better science and a more compassionate future. Thank you for helping build the movement that made this progress possible. Together, we will keep pushing until every cage is empty.

For the last 155 beagles at Ridglan Farms, August 12 marked more than the end of a journey. It marked the beginning of life beyond a facility that bred dogs for research.

With the release of those final dogs, Ridglan Farms officially closed its doors.

NAVS awarded a grant through our Animal Sanctuary Assistance Program (ASAP) to Big Dog Ranch Rescue. The funding helped transport the beagles from Wisconsin to Florida and provide veterinary care as they began their next chapter.

This was our first ASAP grant to Big Dog Ranch Rescue, and we are grateful to support the organization and its partners as they helped bring this long-awaited rescue to completion.

The doors at Ridglan Farms are closed. For these dogs, new doors are finally opening.

This World Cancer Research Day, we’re highlighting how NAVS supporters are helping advance a more human-relevant approach to cancer research.

Through NAVS’ partnership with the International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER), Fellow Lunan Liu is developing a 3D human model of pancreatic cancer that combines patient-derived organoids with organ-on-a-chip technology.

By bringing together tumor, stromal, and immune cells from the same patient, Lunan’s model aims to better recreate an individual patient’s cancer and help researchers understand why responses to treatment can vary. He is also exploring how artificial intelligence can help analyze the large volume of imaging data produced by the model.

This work brings together biology, engineering, medicine, and computational science to pursue better insights into human disease while reducing reliance on animal models.

On World Cancer Research Day, we’re proud to celebrate Lunan’s research and the supporters helping make this progress possible.
