What can hands-on biology look like without animal dissection?

Applications are now open for the 2027 BioLEAP Classroom Grant. Educators teaching anatomy or comparative biology can receive up to $1,000 in humane learning resources, including anatomy models, synthetic dissection tools, and augmented reality technology.

During the 2026 grant cycle, BioLEAP reached nearly 1,300 students and replaced more than 1,050 animal specimens. Every participating educator said students enjoyed the alternatives and planned to keep using them, while 94% reported that students learned just as well as, or better than, they would have through traditional dissection.

A number tattooed on Andi’s chest told the story of a past he should never have endured.

When this rhesus macaque was found alone in eastern Kentucky, he was thin, missing much of his fur, and showing signs of trauma.

Today, Andi is safe at Primate Rescue Center, where he has nutritious food, expert care, enrichment, and the comfort of no longer facing life alone.

But rescue is only the beginning.

Animals who survive research often need specialized, lifelong care. Through our Animal Sanctuary Assistance Program (ASAP), NAVS provides critical support to sanctuary partners caring for animals like Andi.

From the conference floor to Capitol Hill, NAVS had a busy and inspiring time in Washington, D.C. at the Taking Action for Animals Conference.

We connected with advocates from across the country, learned new strategies for effective advocacy, and met with organizations and sanctuaries caring for animals retired from laboratories.

During Lobby Day, we visited congressional offices to discuss the Better CARE for Animals Act and the need for stronger enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act. We also spent time sharing NAVS’ work to replace animal experimentation with more effective, human-relevant research methods.

One of the best parts of the conference was reconnecting with longtime colleagues, including Melanie D.G. Kaplan, author of Lab Dog, and meeting so many people committed to creating a more compassionate future for animals.

The future of Alzheimer's research is already taking shape.

NAVS is proud to spotlight Shaoxuan (Lily) Ma, a recipient of the 2026 NAVS Humane Science Award at Regeneron ISEF.

Lily's award-winning research explored Alzheimer's disease using patient-derived organoids grown from human cells, investigating whether naturally occurring extracellular vesicles could help reduce inflammation and cellular stress associated with the disease.

Her work demonstrates the promise of human-relevant science and the incredible impact young researchers are already making.

As Lily shared, "Every single family has felt it or knows someone who's felt it."

The NAVS Humane Science Award recognizes students whose innovative research is helping shape a future where science is more effective, more ethical, and more human-relevant.

OHSU has abandoned plans to convert the Oregon National Primate Research Center into a sanctuary. However, the university’s Board of Directors has unanimously committed to substantially reducing the facility’s primate population and making it a national leader in New Approach Methodologies.

The decision could limit breeding, move some monkeys to accredited sanctuaries, end the facility’s role as a national supplier of primates, and mark a significant break from the federal primate research center network.

But the resolution also allows monkey experiments to continue in areas OHSU considers irreplaceable. Without firm timelines, transparent criteria, and measurable targets, that exception could leave the door open to continued animal use.

This is a meaningful shift, but OHSU must turn its commitments into measurable action and establish a clear path toward ending primate experimentation entirely.

"The continued use reflects institutional inertia and outdated testing frameworks, even as more predictive, human-relevant, non-animal methods continue to advance."

NAVS was recently featured in Erie News Now discussing the urgent need to modernize biomedical research and move beyond outdated dog testing.

While innovative, human-relevant technologies continue to advance, too many institutions remain tied to legacy animal testing practices. At NAVS, we're working to change that by advocating for broader adoption of non-animal research methods, encouraging agencies like the FDA and NIH to embrace these approaches, and supporting policies that accelerate the transition to better science.

What if two of the most widely used medicines in history had never made it to patients?

According to NAVS Director of Advocacy and Policy Meredith Blanchard, it's entirely possible.

In a recent conversation with Better Life for Animals Podcast, Meredith explains that if today's animal testing requirements had existed when penicillin and aspirin were first developed, they may never have reached the public. Penicillin is toxic to guinea pigs, while aspirin causes birth defects and other toxicities in several animal species, despite both becoming invaluable medicines for people.

As Meredith explains, that raises an important question:

How many promising therapies have been abandoned because they failed in animals but may have benefited humans?
