On the eve of the annual IJA installation of new officers and Board members we reflect on an extraordinary year of leadership, we extend our sincere gratitude to Justice Elizabeth Rochford for a year dedicated to strengthening judicial connections and building bridges between the courthouse and the communities we serve.

Through her commitment to engagement, collaboration, and outreach, Justice Rochford traveled to all 25 districts, bringing not only her vision for the future but also her signature warmth—complete with cookies and Matosian gavels. Her efforts united judges across the state, fostered meaningful dialogue, and reinforced the importance of connection within our profession.

Under her leadership, the IJA committees were strengthened with renewed purpose and focus, creating opportunities for members to contribute, collaborate, and advance the mission of our association.

We are deeply grateful for Justice Rochford's dedication, energy, and service. Her leadership has left a lasting impact, and the relationships built this year will continue to benefit our judiciary for years to come.

As we look ahead, we are excited to build upon this strong foundation with incoming president Patrice Ball-Reed. We look forward to exploring new opportunities for judicial excellence and continuing the important work of connecting, supporting, and strengthening our judicial community.

Thank you, Justice Rochford, for an unforgettable year of leadership, service, and inspiration.

On April 8, 2026, Appellate Court Justice Margaret Mullen, Judge Michael Fusz (Ret.), retired attorney Stephen Larson of Swanson, Martin & Bell, and members of the judiciary partnered with College of Lake County nursing students for an impactful mock medical malpractice trial experience.

Using medical charts created during the students’ first simulated clinical exams, the program demonstrated how charting omissions can lead to real-world legal consequences. Through this engaging exercise, students gained insight into both the legal process and the critical importance of accuracy, attention to detail, and accountability in healthcare.

Programs like these highlight the value of collaboration between the legal and educational communities while helping prepare future professionals for the responsibilities they will carry in their careers.

Judges from across Illinois gathered yesterday at the historic Old State Capitol in Springfield for a collaborative continuing legal education seminar hosted by the Illinois Judges Association (IJA) and the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA).

Held in the beautiful former General Assembly Room, the program featured educational presentations on healthcare advancements, judicial benefits and insurance updates, and Illinois legal history, including a fascinating discussion on *David Davis: Abraham Lincoln’s Favorite Judge*.

Attendees were also honored to welcome members of the Illinois Supreme Court for lunch and conversation, with remarks from IJA President Justice Elizabeth Rochford and Chief Justice Neville.

Programs like these highlight the importance of lifelong learning, professional collaboration, and strengthening connections within Illinois’ legal community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this outstanding event possible!

A powerful week of outreach, education, and remembrance across Illinois’ Fourth District courts. ⚖️

Members of the judiciary came together to engage students, connect with the community, and honor the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to the law.

At Illinois State University, the Illinois Appellate Court Fourth District held oral arguments, giving students a firsthand look at the judicial process in action. Justices David Vancil, Raylene Grischow, and James Knecht presided over arguments in *People v. Roland Breault*. Students from ISU’s Legal Studies Department attended the proceedings and are studying the case and briefs as part of their coursework—an outstanding example of civic and legal education in action.

The week also included the moving Sangamon County Bar Association Memorial Service, where members of the bench and bar gathered to honor deceased lawyers and judges whose dedication shaped the legal profession and their communities.

Among those in attendance were Lisa Holder White, Amy Lannerd, and April Troemper.

The memorial service featured Raylene Grischow, Ryan Cadagin, and Meghan McCarthy reading the names of the honored members of the legal community. The Springfield Lawyers Men’s Choir, conducted by retired Judge Roger Holmes, provided a meaningful musical tribute.

From the courtroom to the classroom and throughout the community, the Fourth District continues to demonstrate the importance of judicial outreach, education, and service.

Celebrating leadership in action on **Law Day** ⚖️

We are proud to highlight IJA member and Legislative Committee Co-Chair, the Hon. Chris Kolker, for getting out into the community and making a meaningful impact.

At career day at Grant Middle School, students from four area schools had the opportunity to connect one-on-one with Judge Kolker and learn about careers in the legal field. Engaging directly with eighth graders, he helped bring the judiciary to life—answering questions, sharing insights, and inspiring the next generation.

This is what building bridges from the courthouse to the community looks like. 👏
