The Desk was invited as a member of the Englewood-Ghana Sankofa Economic and Cultural Delegation traveling to Ghana recently. The delegation was championed and sponsored by IL State Senator Willie Preston in partnership with the .

The goal of the 8-day journey was to develop and strengthen the Englewood connection to Ghana through economic opportunity, cultural exchange, education partnerships and global collaboration.

During our time there, the delegation was further educated on the emotional and economic impact of the transatlantic slave trade including the significance of “Door of No Return”. It was shared during our trip that more than 12 million Africans were captured with only 2 out 10 surviving the journey to the Americas. Ghana has been independent from the United Kingdom for 69 years. While they have made great progress, they still struggle with the lack of infrastructure to truly benefits from its natural resources such as gold and cacao.

In addition to understanding the history of Ghana, the delegation met with government officials, representatives of the King of Cape Coast and networked with small businesses to identify opportunities to collaborate.

We are thankful for the opportunity to participate and appreciate all the hard work in coordinating and curating this experience.

Real Men Charities hosted a lively panel discussion at The Quarry Event Center to discuss strategies for revitalizing neighborhood corridors.

Tips and strategies from Auburn Gresham, Chatham and South Shore were shared. A few key themes surfaced:
1) Everyone needs to do their part. Residents and lead development agencies in the neighborhood must work together to keep the streets clean, help reduce crime and support local businesses.

2) Ownership is the key to transforming neighborhoods. Without owning the neighborhood assets, residents are dependent on others to make a change.

3) In under-resourced neighborhoods, residents and leaders must be creative on how resources are secured recognizing there are inherent biases related to capital access.

Last week, former planning commissioner coordinated a group of delegates from the (Harvard University Graduate School of Design) to visit Chicago with the goal of bringing innovative ideas to a proposed development site near the Obama Presidential Center.

The group hosted a small dinner at the Bronzeville Winery that provided an opportunity for the students to learn more about Chicago including the culture, the neighborhoods and the nuances of Chicago development. We wish the teams luck as they cultivate their ideas.

It’s WOW Wednesday.

We conclude this WOW Wednesday series with a powerful example of worker ownership and cooperative growth.

CrossTreats, formerly 6ix-cess Foods, will acquire and rehabilitate a 12,500-square-foot building in Avalon Park, converting the space into the manufacturing headquarters for their worker cooperative. Wealth Our Way funding will support the buildout of a commercial kitchen, food storage, dedicated manufacturing and packaging areas, and office and meeting rooms for cooperative operations and workforce development.

The renovation will also create an event and tasting space for product launches, community meetings, and partner events. These upgrades will allow CrossTreats to scale its signature Mo’Mo Bites line, expand into new products, create local jobs, and revitalize a long-vacant property.

The cooperative has engaged Avalon Park residents through door-to-door outreach, open houses, participation in local association events, and partnerships with community institutions—ensuring the project reflects neighborhood priorities.

It’s WOW Wednesday!

Wealth Our Way (W.O.W.) supports residents collectively owning the places where they live and work.

Bennett Place is a resident-led redevelopment of a mixed-use building located at 71st Street and Bennett Avenue in South Shore. The building includes sixteen apartments above ground-floor commercial space and was purchased collectively in 2020 by 27 South Shore neighbors committed to reinvesting in their community.

Wealth Our Way funding will support the conversion of the 5,000-square-foot commercial space into two new restaurant concepts: a sit-down restaurant with an outdoor patio and a restaurant incubator that will function as a food hall for emerging local entrepreneurs.

Bennett Place’s work is guided by values of local ownership, democratic decision-making, and inclusive investment, reflecting a shared belief that South Shore deserves the same quality-of-life amenities found throughout the city.

Next WOW Wednesday, we will conclude the series with a worker cooperative scaling production and creating local jobs.

Today we honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose vision of justice, equity, and collective responsibility continues to guide our work.

May today be more than a remember but rather a call to communities to come together to serve, organize, and lead with purpose.

It’s WOW Wednesday! This week we highlight Five Point Holistic Health.

Community wealth building comes in many forms including collectively owned businesses or worker co-ops.

Five Point Holistic Health is completing the buildout of the second floor of its Avondale location to expand holistic services and create a fully accessible community space. Wealth Our Way funding will support the installation of an ADA-accessible lift, renovation of two restrooms, construction of additional treatment rooms, refinishing of damaged floors, and completion of a second-floor kitchenette for community use.

These improvements will allow the upper floor to function as a space for community meetings, group workshops, cooperative education, and expanded health services—advancing Five Point’s long-term vision for the site.

Founded in 2014 by five recent graduates, Five Point has grown into one of Chicago’s longest-standing worker cooperatives, offering acupuncture, herbal medicine, bodywork, massage therapy, and psychotherapy through an affordable, community-centered model.
