Juneteenth is a reminder that freedom and voting go hand and hand.

Although slavery ended in 1865, Black people have been fighting for generations for equal access to the ballot. The right to vote was hard-won and remains one of the most powerful ways to better our communities and circumstances.

This Juneteenth, take a moment to verify your voter registration, make a voting plan, and encourage others to do the same.

Our hearts go out to the family of Riley O’Neil, 35, a dedicated and cherished member of the Chicago Department of Transportation and champion of safer bike infrastructure. In addition to being a leader on the “Complete Streets” team, he personally helped install many bike racks around the city, including the rack right in front of our ward office at 4747 N Sawyer Ave.

This tragedy makes it clear that we need to finish the work that Riley started by creating safer streets for cyclists and pedestrians. We will continue his efforts to expand protected bike lanes all across Chicago and we will honor his memory by fighting like hell to tax the rich for the funding we need to prioritize green mass transit and safe streets for all.
