Last week, the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance that prohibits city departments from purchasing foodware containing styrofoam and other nonrecyclable plastics. These types of plastics break down into toxic micro- and nano-plastics that pollute our land, our waterways, and our bodies.

This is a small but crucial first step in banning these toxic plastics from our city and our state.

Thank you to Alderman Matt Martin and our partners in the Coalition for Plastic Reduction for getting this important legislation across the finish line! 🎉🎉🎉

LWV Chicago President Jane Ruby is honored to have been appointed by Mayor Brandon Johnson to the inaugural Fair Access to Democracy Advisory Council. This Advisory Council will make recommendations to the Chicago Mayor's Office and Chicago's City Council with the aim of expanding voting access for Chicagoans and strengthening participation in the democratic process. 👏👏👏

The Fair Access to Democracy Advisory Council is tasked with studying and advancing recommendations to expand voting access for Chicagoans and strengthen participation in the democratic process.
