Tribute to a Spiritual, Biblical Justice Icon and Racial Reconciliation Legend My Mentor, Dr. John M. Perkins
Dr. John Perkins and I first met during my youth ministry years while I was serving on staff with Young Life and completing my Master’s studies at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. From those early encounters, a sacred relationship began to form - one rooted in faith, justice, and truth-telling.
With time, courage, and deep respect, I finally asked Dr. Perkins if he would serve as my mentor. He graciously said yes, and the rest, as they say, is history holy history that has shaped my life, leadership, and ministry for decades. Words honestly fall short in capturing just how much Dr. Perkins has meant to me.
Dr. Perkins was the very first person with whom I shared my Big, Holy, Audacious Vision - a vision birthed in 2001 to journey the Civil Rights Trail as a pilgrimage with Black and White believers from different megachurches. He didn’t hesitate. With faith, courage, and prophetic conviction, he joined me and for more than fifteen years, he faithfully sat in the front seat of the bus, pouring out his heart to participants until he wasn’t able to participate due to his health condition.
With unwavering clarity, Dr. Perkins taught the sacred value of racial reconciliation, the painful reality of justice long denied, and the sobering truth that the Church’s silence too often fell short of truly living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He challenged us not just to believe differently but to live differently.
Dr. Perkins was far more than my mentor. He was one of the most authentic, compassionate, and genuine souls you could ever encounter. His presence carried wisdom. His teaching carried truth. His life carried integrity. His voice, spiritual insight, and moral courage will be deeply missed by the hundreds of thousands of justice-seekers, bridge-builders, and Gospel-centered advocates across this nation and beyond.
Well done, Dr. Perkins. Now is the time for your rest among the other good and faithful servants on the other side.
“Well done, good and faithful servant…enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matthew 25:23)
Love you forever - Your spiritual son,
