Amalia Rojas is from Chicago and is a rising senior at Lane Tech High School. Amalia loves to bake, play basketball, hang out with friends, and work with kids. Amalia loves to capture people and architecture while using a lot of framing techniques in her composition. Amalia has always enjoyed taking photos because it was a way to capture a short moment and make it last forever.

Through her work, Amalia strives to create images that feel unique and tell a story revealing that each photograph is the result of many small moments coming together.

📸 Student Spotlight: Meer Patel

Meer Patel is a rising senior at Northside College Prep High School. Originally from Lebanon, PA, he now lives in Chicago. Meer’s favorite activities include photography, robotics, and volleyball. While he often photographs people and street scenes, his true passion is astrophotography.

From a young age, Meer has been fascinated by the night sky and the desire to capture its every moment on camera. Inspired by Trevor Jones, a film composer, he aims to preserve these scenes forever as they remain unchanging, just as they should be.

This year’s Lens of Hope Award will be presented to our fearless leader FreshLens Chicago Founder and Executive Director, Shirley Nannini.
What began as a one-time summer photography program in 2017 has grown into a thriving organization offering 15 classes in 2025, serving hundreds of young people across Chicago. Shirley’s vision, dedication, and unwavering passion have guided FreshLens’ growth and expanded opportunities for students, with no signs of slowing down.
We are deeply grateful for her leadership, commitment, and belief in the potential of Chicago youth. Through her efforts, countless students have gained creative skills, confidence, and opportunities to reach their full potential.

Marcos Perez is a recent graduate from Lane Tech High School and he is from the south side of Chicago. Marcos is into sports and music, he wrestled for Lane and loves going to concerts. Marcos loves capturing everyday views from his day to day life.
Marcos fell in love with photography during his study abroad trip to Europe. Photography helps him capture moments of beauty amidst the chaos of living in Chicago.
