Now that we’ve covered what to expect in each lift, it’s time to go over the weigh-in process. It’s pretty simple!

1ļøāƒ£ First, make sure to pack all of your gear the night before, including the shirt you’ll be wearing under your singlet, as it will be inspected upon arrival to ensure that all items qualify as approved equipment (i.e., your singlet is a raw singlet and not an equipped squat suit).

2ļøāƒ£ When you arrive, you’ll check in with the judges, who will confirm your arrival and assign you a scorecard with specifications on it.

3ļøāƒ£ After you receive your scorecard, you’ll head to the scale to weigh in. A judge will accompany you, and you are allowed to weigh yourself in as little as your undergarments.

4ļøāƒ£ Once you’ve weighed in and signed off on your weight, the judges will get your rack heights for squat and bench. Make sure to measure instead of assume, as the rack might be different from what you’re used to, and so might the heights.

5ļøāƒ£ Finally, after all of your specifications are accounted for, the judge will take your openers. An opener is the weight that you will take for your first attempt, and you should have one prepared for each lift. For our charity meet, these weights will be in pounds (lbs), so keep that in mind.

Up next in our ā€œGet Ready with Usā€ series is what to expect when squatting in competition! Here’s what you need to know:

1ļøāƒ£ COMMANDS:

In competition, the lifter receives two commands when squatting: the "start" or "squat" command and the "rack" command.

ā–ŖļøSTART/SQUAT: Once you are motionless (feet still, knees locked out, no bar movement) after unracking the bar, the judge will give the "start" or "squat" command. You may then begin your squat.
ā–ŖļøRACK: Once you have completed vour squat and are determined to
be motionless, the same judge will give the "rack" command. You may
then rack the bar and exit the platform.

2ļøāƒ£ WHAT MAKES A "GOOD" LIFT:

ā–ŖļøOBEY THE COMMANDS: If you begin your squat or rack the bar before the respective command is given, your lift will be red-lighted.
ā–ŖļøBE STILL: Once you have received the "start" or "squat" command, you cannot move your feet or change the position of the bar on your back.
ā–ŖļøHIT DEPTH: Make sure your hip joint is lower than the tops of your knees at the bottom of your squat. Two or more judges must determine that vour squat is to depth in order for you to receive a good lift!
ā–ŖļøNO DOWNWARD BAR PATH: Once you begin the concentric motion (the "standing up") of the squat, the bar must only move up. Stopping or slowing down is allowed, but there can be no double bouncing or downward bar path if the lift is to receive white lights.
ā–ŖļøFINALLY, and perhaps most importantly for the safety of everyone on the platform, DO NOT, under ANY circumstance, INTENTIONALLY
drop or dump the bar. If you suspect that you will not complete the lift, signal your spotters, and they will take the bar from you. Intentionally dropping or dumping the bar is disrespectful and
dangerous, and can be grounds for disqualification.

We’re kicking off our Get Ready with Us series with the basics: Form!

While many aspects of form vary greatly depending on your individual anatomy, there are a several constants across the Big 3 lifts that everyone should keep in mind:

ā–Ŗļø ROOTING: Everything starts with the feet! Many coaches use the cue ā€˜tripod foot,’ which is to say, be mindful of three points of contact: your big toe, your little toe, and your heel. Distribute your weight evenly across these three points and twist your foot into the ground. This motion ā€˜roots’ you to the floor and helps generate more aggressive force in your lift!

ā–Ŗļø KNEES OPEN: While this is an action that looks different depending on anatomy, it’s important for all lifters to use the gluteus medius (the ā€˜side butt’) in each of the Big 3 lifts. Strengthening and engaging this muscle prevents knee cave, engages the hips and contributes to low back, hip and knee safety.

ā–Ŗļø PELVIC TUCK: Chances are you’ve heard the term ā€˜neutral spine’ at some point, and pelvic tuck is a part of that! Maintaining this position prevents the low back from flaring or rounding, both compromising positions for the spine that can lead to injury. To achieve this, stack your ribcage over your pelvis and lock them in place!

According to and 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline. While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Su***de Prevention Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.

The current Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis, even after 988 is launched nationally.

Happy Friday! Sometimes we all need a little reminder that it is perfectly ok to take necessary breaks.

An often overlooked and overshadowed concept of one's health is rest and recovery.

Not a single person is built to give 100% all of the time. Even the individuals we might look up to plan on breaks to help them last longer and avoid burnout.

How, when, and why to take a break is going to look different for everyone.

An athlete may choose to train on a different day because they are simply too stressed to focus on having the safe training day that they need. While another might tell work they need a slightly longer lunch because they need to take a break from sitting by going for a walk.

Whatever taking a break means to you may differ day-to-day. The important thing to remember is that it is ok to take a step away to take care of yourself.

Share with others who might also need to be reminded that it is ok to take a break!
