September is National Su***de Prevention Month, an important opportunity to focus attention on one of the most serious and persistent challenges facing jails: preventing deaths by su***de. People entering jails often arrive during periods of intense crisis. They may be experiencing mental illness, substance use or withdrawal, recent loss, fear, uncertainty, or disruption of family and community connections. The first days of incarceration can be particularly high risk, but su***de risk can emerge or change at any point during a person’s time in custody. Link in comments.

In correctional health care, mentorship matters more than ever. Students and early-career professionals often want to enter the field — but finding experienced professionals to learn from can be challenging.

The NCCHC Foundation’s new Preceptorship Portal and Workforce Development Hub helps bring people together. Through a national directory of volunteer preceptors, experienced correctional health professionals can share their knowledge and help future clinicians grow.

National Sheriffs’ Association Affirms Commitment to Women’s Health Care in Jails
NSA has adopted a new resolution supporting access to comprehensive, evidence-based maternal and women’s health care in the nation’s jails—an important affirmation of the shared responsibility to protect the health and safety of incarcerated women, their children, and correctional staff.
NCCHC is pleased to work cooperatively with NSA on these critical issues. NSA has a representative on NCCHC’s Board of Representatives, reflecting an ongoing partnership between correctional leaders and health professionals committed to constitutionally acceptable care in jails and prisons
