We had another wonderful Oktoberfestiversary with our friends at Begyle Brewing and Dovetail Brewery this weekend. The weather, bands, b**r, and food were all on point! You came together for good as well and generated nearly 300,000 meals for our neighbors facing hunger. Today we honor Indigenous Peoples Day. No matter our differences every person deserves to have access to nutritious food.

Did you know Native Americans are about three times more likely to be food insecure than white individuals, according to USDA data? Though other sources within Nativ American and tribal communities note the disparities are much greater.

Additionally, Native American communities are often in food deserts, which means there is not a fresh food grocery store within a mile of their community.

It was inspiring to hear from Nadia about everything she and The Friendship Center are doing for their neighbors. It reminded me of something my good friend Chris T Harris Sr. said that I really identified with: faith and acts are intertwined.

The Friendship Center gives me faith because it’s a hub for generous acts from one Chicagoan to another. People are stepping up, taking care of their neighbors and doing the hard work our communities need. But that work is far from over. As mayor, I’ll make sure City Hall is a real partner to organizations like The Friendship Center that are already doing so much for Chicagoans.

Another thing that makes The Friendship Center so special is that they operate one of the only pet pantries in the city, serving 500 to 600 pets every month! For families going through a tough time, making sure there’s food for the dog or cat is part of making sure the whole family is taken care of.

I wish every Chicagoan had the resources to care for the pets they love, but when times get tough, Nadia and her team are doing incredible work to take some of that stress off families and help keep people and their pets together. As a dog owner and fierce advocate for our furry friends, that’s something I love to see!

At the height of the ICE raids that terrorized our city, agents set up operations in the park directly across from The Friendship Center, frightening people who relied on the pantry and even targeting and harassing staff like Nadia.

What ICE did was abhorrent and disgusting, but what The Friendship Center did in response showed what’s special about Chicago. Nadia and her team adapted their space, found creative ways to keep food accessible and worked to make sure their neighbors were still safe accessing the help they needed.

That’s Chicago at its best. When our neighbors are under attack, we find a way to show up for each other.

Back this week with another neighborhood tour - this time in Albany Park! We started at The Friendship Center , a food pantry that has been serving Chicagoans since 1969. They offer free groceries, pet supplies and household essentials to neighbors in need four days a week and serve hot meals every Thursday.

I got a tour of the space from Executive Director Nadia Jimenez. She’s an incredible advocate for those in need and is doing great work to expand The Friendship Center’s reach to even more Chicagoans.

I was impressed and inspired by Nadia, the Friendship Center team and the community that’s being built out of their hub - this won’t be our last time working together. Stay tuned for an exciting collaboration between The Friendship Center and the Quigley Crew!
