The plan outlines the state's goals for passenger and freight rail and lays the foundation for federal funding eligibility. Passenger updates are made annually with the full plan updated every four years.

Maryland has quietly become one of the key sites of railway upgrades in the Northeast Corridor.

Three consecutive water crossings on a 35-mile stretch between Baltimore and the Susquehanna River will soon be rebuilt or replaced: the Gunpowder River Bridge, Bush River Bridge, and Susquehanna River Bridge. This is in addition to the massive B&P Tunnel Replacement Program now underway in Baltimore.

The largest of the three projects, the Susquehanna, is now underway. Early construction began in July 2024, following removal of the remaining piers from an 1866 predecessor to the current bridge. The target completion date is 2036.

A second daily Amtrak Pennsylvanian train between New York City and Pittsburgh will begin service on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2026. This is good news, and PennDOT should keep this momentum going to add even more frequencies to and from the City of Bridges.

Amtrak's Pennsylvanian will run between New York City and Pittsburgh, with stops that include Harrisburg and Philadelphia.

Increased transportation options for central and southern Lake County, Indiana residents traveling to downtown Chicago and surrounding areas will be the focus of “Construction and Testing of the West Lake Corridor Project/Monon Corridor,” a UTC online Seminar Series presentation on Thursday, Oct. 15 at noon CDT. Gary Babcoke, Chief Mechanical Officer for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, will lead the discussion.

The Buffalo – New York Empire Corridor is a great case for network planning. Without a federal rail plan, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) considers only the traffic potential within the state, instead of the total market-shed for the route.

Imagine Buffalo Central Terminal in the near future. Every hour, trains arrive and depart toward Cleveland, Toronto, New York, and beyond.
