Why is it still this hard to find a local place to volunteer?

Google surfaces the big national names, and the old directories come up empty. Dvora Inwood built Samaritan Scout to fix that, an AI-powered search engine connecting anyone to local, in-person opportunities across 25,000 organizations nationwide.

The money for a reflecting pool could have fed kids instead.

Shane Lukas of A Great Idea says the problem was never that the money didn't exist. It's that we never demanded it be spent differently.

What would you demand it be spent on instead?

Put your own mask on first.

Shane Lukas of A Great Idea has been an activist since his teens, and says the biggest mistake new activists make is getting so swept up in the cause that they forget to check in on themselves.

Who's checking on you while you're out there fighting for everyone else? Agi Property

The lone hero myth is a lie.

Shane Lukas of A Great Idea points to Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson as proof: even the most iconic leaders in the LGBTQ+ rights movement never did it alone.

You wouldn't need food banks if food deserts didn't exist.

Shane Lukas of A Great Idea says a lot of nonprofits are managing a symptom instead of fixing the system that created it, and donors can tell the difference.

Can you explain what an organization actually does?

Shane Lukas of A Great Idea says even organizations doing incredible work lose people when their mission gets too broad to explain in one sentence. Clarity is what makes someone choose to invest in you.

Why did a 20 year design career pivot to nonprofits?

Shane Lukas spent two decades building award winning design work for major brands. In 2015, he founded A Great Idea because the nonprofits he already worked with couldn't get that same level of support, and he's been building advocacy centered brands ever since.

David Homan almost built his trust scoring system out of 10, then realized the math was working against him.

Score someone a 6 out of 10 and they hear failure. Score them a sixty out of a hundred and it feels even worse.

So he rebuilt it out of 15. An 11 out of 15 feels like a win. A 4 out of 15 feels like room to grow instead of proof you're bad at relationships.

Would a different scoring system change how you saw your own numbers?

08/13/2026

David Homan was two minutes late to a call because his sick 12 year old needed her medicine. The person on the other end made him feel judged for it.

By the end of that call, he knew he'd never work with them again. Not because they were harsh, but because how someone reacts when your kid needs you tells him everything about whether they belong in his network.

Would you cut someone off for judging you as a parent?

08/12/2026

David Homan says the biggest doors in his career opened when he wasn't even in the room.

Someone he'd built trust with brought his name up to exactly the right person, at exactly the right moment, without him asking. That's not luck. That's what happens when you're intentional about the relationships you build.

Who's been an advocate for you in a room you weren't even in?
