THE STORY OF GRACE BY EXAMPLE

Today marks day 730—two years since Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina. Most of the public still does not fully understand the scale of the devastation. The NC Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM) https://www.osbm.nc.gov/hurricane-helene-dna/open page 5 reports that 73,000 homes and businesses across 36 counties were damaged, with total losses estimated at $59 billion. On October 5, 2024, eight days after the storm, some of the people who would later form Grace by Example were on the ground delivering materials and supplies to communities and families devastated by severe flooding, wind, and landslides. This initial effort was called Grace In Action, and it evolved into the faith-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit Grace by Example. https://www.gracebyexample.org

Grace by Example is an entirely volunteer-run nonprofit. Its officers and board of directors receive no compensation. All donations go directly to helping families in need, except for funds required to cover operating expenses such as the website and business software.

We are very grateful to the people who have given donations of their time, talent and monetary. Because of these donations Grace By Example has had the privilege and honor of completing 15 projects to date. The two latest projects involved helping two families to get into replacement homes. https://www.gracebyexample.org/projects

We also have been privileged to work with Samaritan’s Purse and Baptist on Mission on some home building projects. Very appreciative of the things we have had the opportunity to learn from them.

Even so, we still have the opportunity and privilege to serve many more families devastated by the storm. As year three begins, what may be a ten-year rebuilding process is still ahead. One of the people we get to serve is a gentleman who lost his wife of 53 year not long before Hurricane Helene. He then lost his home, his house belonging and utility buildings some vehicles and alot of equipment. His new home is in place but now we are trying to help him with all the other things he lost.

Weekly Prayer

Dear Lord, over these past 703 days, we thank You for the privilege You have given Grace By Example to walk alongside families who lost everything during Hurricane Helene—their homes, belongings, vehicles, mobile homes, utility buildings for small family businesses, and the equipment they depended on. We thank You for the small communities that have come together to support one another, and for the opportunity to serve alongside Samaritan’s Purse and Baptists on Mission. Lord, help us remember that this work is not only about helping rebuild homes, but more importantly about building transformational relationships that show the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.

We lift up Family 3 and Family 4 as they near the completion of their long journey back to a new home, and we ask You to bless every person who has donated, prayed, and supported these families along the way. Please continue to provide the funds needed to complete the process for these two families and for the other families still on their journey.

Move hearts to give as they are able, knowing that even donations of $5.00, joined with others, can make a meaningful difference. As I sit at my desk tonight it has been 700 days since Hurricane Helene struck catastrophically impacting 73,000 homes. Grace By Example has had the privilege to serve these families as they walk their long journey back to normal. Their stories of faith, courage, resilience and caring for others is profound. The four families highlighted tonight are nearing the finish line. We are currently raising $30,000 to help finish these projects out. Was privilege to attend a home dedication for a family devasted 515 days ago by Hurricane Helene. Also there is a family in a real need of a mobile home.
