This evening as I sit at my warm desk and type this blog my heart is very heavy for the family I am writing about as well as many others. At the time of writing, the family is experiencing heavy snowfall and very low temperatures in their region. I cannot fathom the challenging living conditions that they are currently living under.

Grace By Example (GBE) is committed to supporting families affected by this event. Currently, one of the families GBE is assisting is a family whose mobile home was destroyed by a fallen tree; they have been residing in a camping trailer since the incident.

In the days leading up to January 21, 2026, temperatures dropped to 12 degrees, causing the sewage pipes to freeze resulting in sewage backing up into the family's camper shower and toilet. Baptist on a Mission placed hay bales around the camper to thaw the sewage pipes.

Baptist on a Mission was also on site to assist with debris removal and to dismantle a deteriorating storage building, making space for an 8' by 20' storage box to be provided by Grace By Example. The family required storage solutions for belongings from the old shed as well as salvageable items from the mobile home, which is scheduled for demolition and removal in the very near future. The 8’ x 20’ Conex storage box was delivered by Grace By Example on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

The needs for this particular family’s project are as follows:
• Need to remove existing damaged shed and debris - Completed!
• Shipping/Conex Container 8’ X 20’ to be used for storage - Completed!
• Need to remove existing damaged mobile home and shed
• Need a 14-16’ wide by 70’ long Mobile Home with 2 /3 bedrooms.
• Need materials for materials to build a covered deck 8.5’ x 30’ to be attached to the front of the new mobile home
Verses like Matthew 22:36-39 and Matthew 14:6 continue to be the driving force of the work of Grace By Example.

As I sit at my desk this evening it has been 451 days since Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina. The storm caused 73,000 homes to be damaged, and an estimated 59 billion dollar deficit has been incurred, once all government and insurance funds have been distributed.

I returned this afternoon from the Spruce Pines and Burnsville areas of Western North Carolina. There are many things to be grateful for. Numerous efforts are being made in many of the small mountain communities. Many individuals have chosen to walk with families as Jesus walks with us. A “service before self-attitude” can be found throughout the small mountain hollars! As an example of two families that GBE has been given the precious privilege to walk with as their homes are rebuilt are now grateful to see these houses “ dried in” and moving forward.

It is also important to realize there is so much work to be done. You have been there from the start and wanted you to know I received this text this morning from one of the families GBD is and has been supporting.

"Last night for the first time in 426 days. All of my people slept in a finished space. Thank you and your folks so much. Best early Christmas present ever."

Note: This family lost the family home/hotel and two family members after the flood. All our work through GBE is making a difference.

We are not building just homes but more importantly showing the love of Christ. With giving Tuesday and the end of the year approaching I pray that you and others will help spread the word.

As I sat at the table this Thanksgiving Day morning I received the following verse from a friend,
