“Our unhoused neighbors are people, not a problem.”

For Part 4 of our series, we’re hearing from our Clinical Director, Breanna.

Homelessness is something a person is experiencing. It is not who they are.

Our unhoused neighbors are people with stories, families, strengths, struggles, hopes, and goals. They deserve to be seen, heard, and treated with dignity.

That’s where street outreach starts: seeing the person first.

Charlotte-area DAF holders: You already gave it away, now put it to work!

DAFdayCLT is Oct. 8, 2026 (give Oct. 5–9) — a local call to encourage donors to recommend DAF grants to Charlotte-area nonprofits they care about.

For Charlotte’s inaugural DAFdayCLT, our goal is to increase DAF donations to support our mission of addressing homelessness with compassion and urgency by removing barriers and creating pathways to stable housing.

We LOVE running into our former clients.

Our Clinical Director, Breanna, recently ran into a former HFTICC client who has now been housed for FIVE MONTHS! He couldn't wait to tell her how happy he is in his new place—and we couldn't be happier for him.

Street outreach starts with meeting someone where they are. Building trust. Showing up. Working through barriers. And continuing to believe that something different is possible.

Housing is more than a move-in day. It's a chance for stability, a fresh start, and a new chapter.

Five months later, he's still housed and loving his new home. That's what it's all about.

This week, we’re hearing from Demetrius and Jonelle about what they want YOU to know about street outreach and our unhoused neighbors.

Every person we meet has their own story. Their own experiences. Their own barriers. Their own goals.

Our job is to meet people where they are, listen, build trust, and keep showing up.

In Part 2, Torrey and Dorothy share what they wish more people understood about this work and our unhoused neighbors.

There is no one-size-fits-all path to housing. Every person is different, and outreach isn’t a quick process. It takes patience, consistency, trust, and a willingness to keep showing up.

Our unhoused neighbors also carry trauma and experiences we may never fully understand. A little compassion can go a long way.

And as Dorothy reminds us: “When you see someone, help someone.”

A big shoutout to our friends at United for Good (HUG)!

HUG helps keep our pantry stocked with snacks and essential items so our outreach teams always have something to offer our neighbors. And when someone moves into their new home, HUG helps stock their kitchen with food to get them started.

We are so grateful for their continued generosity and partnership. Thank you, HUG, for showing up for our neighbors again and again!

Jessica has been selected for the 11th Edition of Who’s Who In Black Charlotte and will be featured in the Professionals & Entrepreneurs section alongside other Charlotte-area professionals making an impact in our community.

Since founding HFTICC in 2020, Jessica has worked to transform how our community responds to unsheltered homelessness—always centered on dignity, housing, and ethical urgency.

We’re so excited to see her leadership and dedication recognized!
