America's ToothFairy

America's ToothFairy We work to ensure all children can access dental care and learn about oral health.

Millions of children are without access to dental services and face ongoing health consequences as a result, including untreated tooth decay and other, more intensive dental needs. As a resource provider, America’s ToothFairy increases access to oral health care by supporting nonprofit clinics and community partners delivering education, prevention and treatment services for underserved children.

Feeling happy makes us smile, but did you know the opposite is also true? Brain imaging studies show that smiling—even a fake smile—causes a reaction in the brain that reduces stress and improves mood!

On the other hand, poor oral health can set off a chain reaction of poor overall health. The germs that cause gum disease can cause inflammation that makes depression and anxiety worse. Brush and floss daily and see your dental care provider every six months to have a healthy smile that you’re happy to share!

Smiles impact how we feel about ourselves.

Kids whose cavities show when they smile or talk are targets for teasing or bullying. As a result, they’re less likely to speak in class or share their smile with others. This can make your child feel bad about themselves well into adulthood.

Help your child prevent cavities for the rest of their life! Make sure they brush and floss every day. Take them for dental check-ups every six months.

It's National Cheese Day! 🧀 Did you know cheese can help protect your smile?

It's packed with calcium, helps strengthen tooth enamel, and encourages saliva production that washes away harmful bacteria. It’s one of the many foods that can help kids grow up with healthier smiles and healthier bodies.

That’s why one of our newest Share Your Smile resources encourages families to “Build a Smart Plate” filled with smile-friendly foods like:
🥕 Crisp fruits & veggies
🍗 Lean proteins
🧀 Cheese & dairy
🌾 Whole grains

Our FREE Oral Health Month materials also help children learn:
• how sugary and starchy foods affect teeth
• how food impacts the whole body
• how to make healthier choices every day

A JAMA Network Open study reveals a paradox in school-based oral health programs: the very children most likely to benefit are often the least likely to enroll, exposing how fragile consent systems, communication gaps, and caregiver realities are undermining access to care.

It’s easy to take your smile for granted, but it helps you in so many ways! Oftentimes your smile is the first thing others notice when they first meet you.

Helping children understand the importance of a healthy smile and how to take care of theirs is an important step as they learn how to make friends. Teach your child to brush for 2 minutes, 2 times every day to establish healthy habits that will last into adulthood.

What happens when parents don’t return consent forms for school-based dental programs?

Too often, the conversation stops at “noncompliance.” But the reality is usually far more complicated.

We’re grateful to Dimensions of Dental Hygiene for publishing our latest article, “The Hidden Barrier in School-Based Dental Care,” which explores how confusion, distrust, language barriers, transportation challenges, and competing family priorities can all affect access to preventive dental care for children.

We also want to thank Ready Set Smile, Let's Smile, Inc. and Central Community College for contributing their insight and frontline experience to this article. Their work helping children and families overcome barriers to care is making a difference every day.

Next week, we’ll follow up with a second article focused on practical solutions and successful community-centered strategies.
