Event: Mountain State Kayak Anglers Elk River/Sutton Lake.
Where: Clay, WV
When: June 6th, 2026
Result: 21st out of 37 (45.75, 4 fish limit)

Recap: Anglers for this event had a choice between fishing the Elk River or Sutton Lake. I decided to do a long float with my buddy Evan Adamson and get my river legs under me for the remainder of the year and hope to find 4 decent bass to accumulate some points.

It turned out that it was a junk fishing day that proved harder than everyone hoped on the river. I caught a dozen bass but they were all in that 10 inch range (8 inch minimum) on various techniques. I landed the fish I hooked, just couldnt find at least 1 or 2 good ones. I did have an 18-19 inch smallmouth swim out of a laydown following my jig until it saw my kayak and disappeared.

The float was very enjoyable and we had great weather. Got a workout in too and saw lots of "trash" fish, but hardly saw any smallmouth except a handful of like 6 inchers. Worrying signs for the river, if I'm honest.

My apologies for not making the awards, it took me forever to get to the takeout and by the time Evan and I had everything packed up the awards were over and we were exhausted. I'm still recovering today 😩

Congrats to Katie Cyfers for the win anchored by a couple big 19 inch largemouth!

Coming into this event I was 1st in AOY standings and I knew this one would be hard. I managed some points and hope to throw this event away at the end of the year. Next up is the WV Bass Nation on the New River that I need to start planning for!
