⛵️ Spotlight on our Ships : DD214 🇺🇸

DD214 is one of the most-used boats in the Veterans on Deck fleet, and for good reason. This J/105 comfortably accommodates six passengers, plus the captain and crew, making it a great fit for getting veterans out on the water together.

At 34 feet, DD214 is a sleek performance sailboat built for speed, responsive handling, and teamwork. Its large open cockpit gives everyone plenty of room to work together, while the simple setup below deck keeps the focus on sailing.

The name DD214 also carries special meaning within the veteran community. A DD214 is the official document that summarizes a service member’s military service. The boat originally sailed under the name Tempest, but after joining the Veterans on Deck fleet, she was officially renamed DD214 in October 2023 — complete with a proper renaming ceremony to make sure King Neptune approved. 🌊

DD214 has become an important part of the VoD fleet and continues to help bring veterans together through sailing, teamwork, and time on the water. ⚓️

A strong showing on the water for an even stronger cause! ⛵️💙

On September 12, Team DD214 competed in the Hollings Cup, raising $1,250 and finishing 3rd place in the regatta. 🥉

Altogether, the Hollings Cup raised an incredible $190,000 to support cancer care right here in Charleston, SC.

We’re proud to be part of an event that brings the sailing community together to make such a meaningful impact. Thank you to everyone who supported Team DD214! 🇺🇸⛵️

If you like the Navy, Sailing Ships, and Sea Power, you should be aware of an art exhibit opening soon at the Citadel. America’s First Fleet: The Revolution at Sea will be on view at the Moore Art Gallery, Capers Hall, Monday through Friday from September 11 through December 8, 10am-3pm. This exhibit is free and open to the public, with an opening reception to be held on Thursday, September 10, from 5:30-7 pm.

⛵ Sail for a Cause!

The 5th Annual MUSC Hollings Cup Regatta is coming up on Saturday, September 12th! Join us as sailors and supporters come together on Charleston Harbor to raise funds for lifesaving cancer research and patient care at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.

Veterans on Deck is proud to have a boat competing in this year’s regatta, and we’d love your support! 🇺🇸⛵

Not sailing? You can still be part of the day!

Veterans on Deck is proud to participate in the 5th Annual MUSC Hollings Cup Regatta on Saturday, September 12, 2026, in Charleston, SC!

This event raises awareness and support for the incredible cancer research and medical care provided by MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.
