With South Carolina ranked ninth in the nation in cer
vical cancer deaths, our advanced diagnostics and treatments are a source of hope to thousands of women each year. As South Carolina's only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, MUSC Hollings Cancer Center offers patients access to the most advanced gynecologic cancer research and clinical trials. Our Gynecologic Cancer Program is ranked nationally as a top hospital for treatment of gynecologic disorders and is expected to accept more than 400 new patients this year alone. Translational research basically refers to moving research from the laboratory to the clinic and ultimately into the community. Translational scientists work in the clinic to understand the problems faced by cancer patients, then take those problems to the laboratory to determine more effective ways to treat them. The Sheryl Sirisky Prisby Cancer Research Fund advances this translational research by supporting medical students, graduate students, MD/PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and clinical research scholars who have dedicated their lives to searching for new ways to prevent, diagnose, treat and cure women’s cancers. Each year the scholarship will be awarded to deserving individuals for financial support in promising research and patient-care initiatives. The recipients will be paired with a senior investigator to help mentor them through their scholarship year and oversee their projects. The elite team of Sheryl Sirisky Prisby Scholars will become leaders in the field of gynecological oncology. Sheryl’s legacy of strength and compassion will serve to inspire them as they continue throughout their careers. Moreover, you will allow us to honor Sheryl’s memory in a permanent and meaningful way in a place dedicated to eradicating the disease that claimed her life.
