Together we inspire our communities, offer hope and change lives through the gift of organ, eye and tissue donation.

We Are Sharing Hope SC (SHSC) is the organ and tissue donation program for the state of South Carolina (except for Aiken and Edgefield counties). As the federally-designated organ procurement organization (OPO) for the state, SHSC is responsible for facilitating the gift of organ and tissue donation for transplantation and research. Invested in the community we serve, the staff at We Are Sharing Hope SC are passionate stewards of the gift of life, honoring all heroes and their families who say “yes.”

For liver recipient Ik, the journey to transplantation was filled with uncertainty. After experiencing liver failure and years of health complications, he was added to the transplant waiting list in March 2022. Five calls came for potential donor livers, but each time, it wasn’t the right match.

Then came the sixth call.

“I knew my donor’s family was saying goodbye to their loved one as I was preparing to receive a second chance at life. I hoped they would be at peace with the selfless gift they were giving me.”
Ik’s recovery brought challenges of its own, but today, he remains deeply grateful for the donor hero whose gift made his second chance possible.

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close tomorrow, meet Evelio Matos-Martell, a consultant Clinical Donation Coordinator at SHSC and a living kidney donor.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Evelio grew up valuing family, faith, generosity and service. In 1997, he donated a kidney to his friend Janice, whom he met while providing dialysis treatments at a kidney center in Rhode Island.

“She did not ask me to become her donor. After getting to know her and seeing what she went through because of dialysis, I offered to be tested.”

Seeing Janice’s life after transplant affirmed his decision.

“I had seen the toll dialysis took on her life. Watching her leave that routine behind made everything worthwhile.”

His experience helped lead him into the organ donation field, where he has worked since 2006. Today, that connection guides his care for donors and their families at SHSC.

“For me, donating a kidney was an act of faith, friendship and service. It changed Janice’s life, but it also changed the direction of mine.”

During Healthy Lung Month, sharing the stories of lung transplant recipients and honoring the donor heroes who made their second chances possible.

Sarah Sizemore received her first double lung transplant at just 22 years old after living with pulmonary hypertension since she was four. After experiencing severe chronic rejection, Sarah found herself once again in need of a lifesaving transplant.

“I thankfully received that second double lung transplant on April 18th, 2024. I am doing extraordinary after this second one and am hiking, walking miles on end and doing so many normal everyday things. I am so grateful for both of my gifts of life and continue to live the greatest life for my donors! I wouldn’t be here without them!”

Today, Sarah’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of organ donation and the life, experiences and everyday moments made possible through the generosity of donor heroes.

October is Liver Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of liver health and the impact liver disease can have on individuals and families.

For liver recipient Gary Simmons, his transplant meant getting his life back. As his liver disease progressed, Gary lost his ability to drive, play golf and enjoy many of the things he loved. After three years of battling his illness, including 16 months on the transplant waiting list, he received the call that would change everything.

Following his transplant, Gary remembers waking up with no pain and feeling “like a new man.” Today, he continues to honor the donor hero who gave him more time with his wife, son and family by sharing his story and encouraging others to register as donors.

October is Healthy Lung Month, a time to recognize the importance of lung health and the lifesaving impact of lung transplantation.

For double lung recipient Pete Schwob, the gift of donation has meant nearly 21 additional years of life. After living with a rare lung disease since childhood, Pete received a double lung transplant in November 2005.

Since then, Pete has watched his daughters graduate from high school and college, attended their weddings and welcomed three great-grandsons. These are moments made possible through the generosity of his donor hero.

“I want others who need a transplant to experience these types of life events.”

Today, Pete continues to honor his donor hero by advocating for donation and helping others understand the difference one donor can make.

This Healthy Lung Month, we celebrate Pete and the donor heroes who give others the opportunity for more time, more milestones and more memories.

“Megan was 37 when she died. Megan was a loving, happy, resilient child. She was independent and had a mind of her own. Megan was an old soul,” shared Judy, mother of donor hero Megan.

“Sharing Hope approached me, but it wasn't a difficult decision to have Megan as a donor. She always expressed her wishes to me and after she was declared clinically dead, I found a spiral book with her wishes in it, which was to donate her organs. I want to donate my organs in passing as well so I was agreeable to her wishes. She was able to help four people continue on with life.

I believe everyone should have the same perspective about donating organs. I received a beautiful letter from one of the recipients, who was so grateful for having another chance at life. Giving back life to those in need is an absolute blessing to all involved. Thank you all.”

Through the gift of donation, Megan’s legacy continues in the lives of those she helped, while her story serves as a powerful reminder of the hope one donor hero can give.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For some individuals impacted by breast cancer, donated tissue can play an important role in healing and reconstruction following a mastectomy. The generosity of tissue donors can help support reconstructive procedures and give recipients another step forward in their healing journey.

This month, we honor those impacted by breast cancer while recognizing the donor heroes whose gifts help restore and heal lives.

grateful to have represented and attended the 34th Annual Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation Conference in Milwaukee!

This year’s theme, Igniting Hope: Uniting Voices for a Stronger Donation and Transplantation Future, brought together professionals from across the donation and transplantation community to share ideas, strengthen connections and continue advancing a more equitable future for donation and transplantation.

We are grateful for opportunities like these to learn, connect and bring new ideas back to the communities we serve across South Carolina.
