The International African American Museum is proud to observe the sacred tradition of Freedom’s Eve, in partnership with the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor National Heritage Area.

We invite you on Wednesday, December 31st at noon, to join us at Morris Brown AME Church for a Midday Watch Service as we pause to reflect on the unwavering faith of our ancestors, the resilience of the Gullah Geechee culture, and the promise of the future as we prepare to enter the New Year.

This service commemorates December 31, 1862: The night when African Americans across the nation gathered, anxiously waiting for the stroke of midnight when the Emancipation Proclamation would finally take effect—giving birth to the Watch Night services observed today.
