💜Horizons at Ashley Hall History 101 💜

New here? Let’s start with the basics and some photos from our first summer!

Horizons at Ashley Hall was founded in 2017 in partnership with Ashley Hall, with a vision to bring a proven national summer learning model to Charleston and advance educational equity for girls in our community.

We launched our 6 week, tuition -free program that first summer with just 30 students in rising 1st and 2nd grade—and have been growing ever since! Today, we are proud to be the only Horizons program in South Carolina and one of just two all-girls programs nationwide.

This summer, we’ll welcome 135 students… PLUS we’re launching something new 👀✨ Stay tuned!

📅 Save the Date: Horizons Giving Day – May 13!

Join us as we unlock opportunity for girls and strengthening our community. Our goal is to raise $35,000 to support our six-week, tuition-free summer program that provides academics, enrichment, swimming, and access to opportunities for our students.

Then celebrate with us at our Giving Day Happy Hour featuring amazing raffle prizes, silent auction items, and a fun evening in support of Horizons!

Learning, growing, and connecting—here’s what our Horizons community has been up to:

• Connecting with families at The Peninsula Promise & CCSD Open House with Horizons student Lauryn, her mom, Eboni, and ED Molly Rathbone 🏫
• SEL lesson + art project with Charleston Hope (and a special visit from former Horizons teacher, Ms. Shama!) 🎨
• Celebrating with supporters and Board members at our “Empowering Girls Together” event with Waves 4 Women 🌊 💜
• Program Director, Ms. DeGruy, catching up with her former student
• Brushing up on swimming skills at Saturday Academy 🏊‍♀️

Our team had an incredible time at the Horizons National Conference in Virginia Beach last month, connecting with and learning from Horizons affiliates across the country.

Highlights included:
✨ The Horizons at Ashley Hall team presenting on Strategic Community Partnerships

🏆 Celebrating our Board Vice Chair, Eric Strickland, as a recipient of the Andrew Clarkson Award for his commitment and longevity to Horizons

💬 Hearing powerful stories from Horizons alumni from Hampton Roads about how the program has shaped their lives and futures (hosted by Maritza McClendon, first woman of color to make a U.S. Olympic Swim Team!!)

We are so grateful to be part of this inspiring national network 💜

We are beyond excited to welcome Jennifer DeGruy as the new Program Director for Horizons at Ashley Hall! Jennifer has been a part of the Horizons at AH community since 2023, serving as our Rising 2nd Grade teacher, and currently works as 1st Grade Lead Teacher and Instructional Coach at our partner school, Compass Collegiate Academy.

With over 17 years of teaching experience, Jennifer brings deep expertise in instructional coaching, data-driven decision-making, and curriculum planning. We are thrilled to see her step into this leadership role and can’t wait to witness the impact she’ll have on our students, teachers, and program. Please join us in giving Jennifer a warm Horizons welcome! 💜
