Got extra books? Want to help promote literacy for young readers?

This is a great opportunity to support our Books Over Break program, running now Nov 1 - Jan 19th.

How you can help:

*Donate new and gently used books (preschool–8th grade) at collection boxes in any CHCCS school, Lincoln Center, or Golden Fig Books in Carrboro.

*Financial donations are also welcome to help purchase high-interest titles, including graphic novels and Spanish-language books.

*Learn more and access the donation book link here: https://publicschoolfoundation.org/events/books-over-break.

MORE INFO: PSF works with social workers at the schools to help deliver books to get books into the hands of CHCCS students. The PSF BOB program expands access to books for students in our community who need them most. Last year, our community donated over 15,000 books which where carefully sorted and distributed to elementary and middle schools across CHCCS.

Broadway Comes to Life for Jag Theater Students at Carrboro High School!

With support from a PSF grant, Jag Theater brought 15 students to New York City for a three-day, two-night Broadway experience filled with performances, workshops, and opportunities to learn from professional artists. Students saw two Broadway shows, toured Broadway theaters, toured the Museum of Broadway, and participated in hands-on stage combat and song-and-dance workshops. They also explored Times Square, the Drama Bookshop, Mood Fabrics, and the Capezio Flagship Store. Read the story: https://publicschoolfoundation.org/destination-broadway/

Yes, we can! This year, we launched an exciting collaboration with the Hill Learning Center to provide intensive, small-group literacy tutoring during the school day, helping students with significant reading needs build confidence and make remarkable progress.

The Science of Reading Professional Learning equipped secondary teachers with evidence-based strategies to better support struggling readers in grades 6–12. Through the new partnership with The Hill Learning Center, teachers from Culbreth Middle School and Phoenix Academy participated in professional learning sessions focused on applying the science of reading. Educators strengthened their understanding of foundational literacy skills while collaborating to integrate practical strategies into daily instruction. By aligning classroom teaching with intensive reading interventions, the program helps ensure students with persistent reading challenges receive consistent, research-based support throughout the school day. Building on its early success, the partnership will expand next year to provide this professional learning to additional secondary teachers across Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

This is just one story and example of the meaningful work that happens when a community comes together! Read more in our annual impact report.https://publicschoolfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/PSF-Impact-Report-2025-26-Digital.pdf
