Our Technical Rescue Team (TRT) had a busy last week of May. TRT spent three days in swiftwater training and preparation in advance of the 2026 hurricane season. Additionally, TRT responded to two separate Search and Rescue calls in support of our colleagues in Franklin and Alamance counties. One search lasted late into the night where our rescuers navigated dense patches of thorn bushes in pitch black darkness in search of the missing individual.

South Orange Rescue Squad's motto is Semper Aptus Muneris - "Always ready to serve". Our volunteer team of highly trained professional rescuers maintains 24/7 readiness at all times of the year in support of our community and our colleagues throughout the state for technical searches and rescues in any environment.

As we close out EMS Week 2026, we want to give special recognition to our graduating members.

Balancing coursework, clinicals, long nights, and continued service to our community is no small feat, and we could not be prouder of everything these students have accomplished. Throughout their studies, they continued showing up for their neighbors with compassion, professionalism, and dedication — a true reflection of the spirit of the South Orange Rescue Squad.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026! We’re excited to see where the road ahead takes you and grateful that we’ve been part of your journey. Your future is bright, and our community is better because of you. 💙🚑

EMS Week Spotlight: Fire Rehab 🚒💙

When firefighters are battling a fire, their focus is on protecting lives and property. Our role is to help take care of them—and the people affected by the emergency—so they can continue doing that critical work safely.

One of the many ways the South Orange Rescue Squad serves our community is through Fire Rehabilitation ("Fire Rehab") operations. During extended incidents, our volunteers provide water, sports drinks, cooling chairs, and medical monitoring to firefighters, checking vital signs and assessing for heat stress, dehydration, and fatigue before they return to the scene.

We also assist displaced residents by offering support, supplies, and a compassionate presence during what is often one of the most difficult days of their lives. (During one recent fire response, our crew helped relocate a turtle that had wandered into the burn path. Everyone deserves a helping hand now and then—even turtles! 🐢)

Recent fires in our community have been a reminder of how quickly lives can be changed and how many agencies come together to help. We are grateful for our partnerships with local fire departments and other emergency responders, and proud to support them when they need us most.

During EMS Week, we're recognizing the many ways EMS providers serve beyond the ambulance—and Fire Rehab is one important example of that commitment.

💙 Thank you to all the firefighters, EMTs, and emergency responders who work tirelessly to keep our community safe.

This week, we celebrate the people who answer the call — day or night, in every kind of weather, through every challenge.

For 55 years, the volunteers and providers of the South Orange Rescue Squad have served our community with compassion, professionalism, and dedication. During EMS Week, we want to recognize and thank every EMT, past and present, who has given their time, energy, and heart to helping others when it mattered most.

Whether you served for a few months or a few decades, your impact has been lasting. Because of you, generations of neighbors, friends, and families have received care when they needed it most.

Thank you for 55 years of service to our community — and to all EMS professionals everywhere, thank you for everything you do.
