We thought it would be helpful to take a quick look at monkeypox.

First, what are the symptoms?
Generally it appears as a painful or itchy rash on or near the ge****ls (p***s, testicles, l***a, and va**na) or a**s (bu****le) but could also be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth. This rash can initially look like pimples or blisters but will eventually scab before healing. Other symptoms of monkeypox can include: Fever, Chills, Swollen lymph nodes, Exhaustion, Muscle aches and backache, Headache, and Respiratory symptoms (e.g. sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough)

How long do monkeypox symptoms last?
Monkeypox symptoms usually start within 3 weeks of exposure to the virus with the rash developing 1-4 days after flu-like symptoms.

How does monkeypox spread?
Monkeypox can be spread anytime from the onset of symptoms until the rash has completely healed (i.e. all scabs have fallen off and a fresh layer of skin has formed). Typically, this takes around 2-4 weeks.

If You Have a New or Unexplained Rash or Other Symptoms...
1) Avoid close contact, including s*x or being intimate with anyone, until you have been checked out by a healthcare provider.
2) If you don’t have a provider or health insurance, visit a public health clinic near you like the Durham or Orange County public health departments.
3) When you see a healthcare provider, wear a mask, and remind them that this virus is circulating in the area.

If you would like to vaccinated…
Contact the Durham (call 919-560-7600) or Orange County public health departments (call 919-245-2400)

North Carolina has reported 616 cases of monkeypox and rates of new infections are slowing; however, it is still your choice to make! Stay safe out there!
