It was 58 degrees in the parking lot and youth were rolling in. That wasn’t small. That wasn’t because a program told them to. That was because something in them chose it.
A good morning to ride.
David, Soe, Saw, and Jesse rolled in together at 10:03. Nadia was a few minutes behind. Then Aiden showed up. Someone asked if he’d ever ridden with the group. He hadn’t. First ride. And first rides mattered.
Six bikes needed to be right before anyone left.
ABC check. Air first. A rear tire was soft. Pump it or swap it? Brakes next. Then chain. In four minutes they shifted from “I just showed up” to “I know what I’m doing.” Those who knew, showed.
Bottles filled. Layers came off. I asked what everyone was thinking:
Southpoint Mall or Maple View Farm?
Southpoint was flat and familiar. Maple View was 7.4 miles of hills—with ice cream at the end. The kind you earned.
They chose Maple View. Of course.
The hills didn’t ask permission. They just showed up. But the descents? That was why you climbed. Nobody could explain what a downhill felt like after a hard push. For 45 seconds, it was the whole point of being alive.
All six made it—riding or walking the last hill. It was 79 degrees now. With cones in hand, they tacked on two extra miles just because they could.
It was Aiden’s first ride with the team. You put him on that bike.
From then until the Spring Excursion, they were going to ride farther than they thought possible, climb hills that felt impossible, and discover things no classroom handed out.
We are taking you with us.
Every week, we will report from the road—the hard days, breakthroughs, team dynamics, weather surprises, and miles we weren’t sure we’d finish.
Because none of it happens without people who decided to be part of it.
That is the Cadence Crew.
People who give monthly and ride with us all year. Who make sure the kids bikes are maintained, camping fees covered, and youth show up to something real.
If you’d been looking for a place to put your belief, this was it.
