It’s 58 degrees.
Six bikes.
And one first ride that changes everything.
This is the start of our riding season at Triangle Bikeworks—where young people don’t just learn how to ride, they learn how to show up for themselves and each other.
You’ll hear the sounds of a morning ride coming together.
You’ll feel the nerves, the laughter, the hills, and the wins.
And you’ll meet Aiden—on his very first ride with the team.
From now until our spring excursion at the end of May, these riders will push past limits they didn’t know they could move. Not because someone told them to—but because someone believed in them.
That belief comes from people like you.
🚲 The Cadence Crew are our monthly donors—the people who fuel this work all year long so we’re never starting from zero. Bikes stay ready. Snacks stay stocked. Kids keep showing up.

We ride every week.
We report back every week.
And when we cross that finish line together in May, you’ll know—you were part of it.
If this moved you, share it with someone who needs to hear it.

Thirty people ride with us every month of the year.
They don't wait for a fundraiser. They don't give when it's convenient. They just show up — same as our riders do, every Sunday morning, regardless of weather.

We call them the Cadence Crew. And right now, we're looking for fifteen more.

This spring, our riders are training for the Spring Excursion and building toward the Summer Experience — two road cycling programs that put young people on bikes and we get out of the way while they discover what they're made of.

None of it happens without people who decide to be part of it all year long.

It was 58 degrees in the parking lot and youth were rolling in. That wasn’t small. That wasn’t because a program told them to. That was because something in them chose it.

A good morning to ride.

David, Soe, Saw, and Jesse rolled in together at 10:03. Nadia was a few minutes behind. Then Aiden showed up. Someone asked if he’d ever ridden with the group. He hadn’t. First ride. And first rides mattered.

Six bikes needed to be right before anyone left.

ABC check. Air first. A rear tire was soft. Pump it or swap it? Brakes next. Then chain. In four minutes they shifted from “I just showed up” to “I know what I’m doing.” Those who knew, showed.

Bottles filled. Layers came off. I asked what everyone was thinking:

Southpoint Mall or Maple View Farm?

Southpoint was flat and familiar. Maple View was 7.4 miles of hills—with ice cream at the end. The kind you earned.

They chose Maple View. Of course.

The hills didn’t ask permission. They just showed up. But the descents? That was why you climbed. Nobody could explain what a downhill felt like after a hard push. For 45 seconds, it was the whole point of being alive.

All six made it—riding or walking the last hill. It was 79 degrees now. With cones in hand, they tacked on two extra miles just because they could.

It was Aiden’s first ride with the team. You put him on that bike.

From then until the Spring Excursion, they were going to ride farther than they thought possible, climb hills that felt impossible, and discover things no classroom handed out.

We are taking you with us.

Every week, we will report from the road—the hard days, breakthroughs, team dynamics, weather surprises, and miles we weren’t sure we’d finish.

Because none of it happens without people who decided to be part of it.

That is the Cadence Crew.

People who give monthly and ride with us all year. Who make sure the kids bikes are maintained, camping fees covered, and youth show up to something real.

If you’d been looking for a place to put your belief, this was it.

Not ready for monthly giving? A one-time gift moves us forward, too!. We’ll keep sending updates, and when the Spring Excursion comes, you’ll know your name belongs on that route.

We ride every week. We report every week. And at the end of May, we'll cross that finish line together.

Stay with us.

From now until the Spring Excursion at the end of May, our riders are going to log more miles than they thought possible, climb hills that felt impossible, and discover things about themselves that no classroom was going to hand them.

We're going to take you with us.

Every week, we'll report back from the road — the hard days and the breakthroughs, the team dynamics and the individual moments, the weather we didn't plan for and the miles we didn't think we'd finish.

We're looking for Community Members who'll ride with us all year long — not just when it's convenient, not just during a campaign. Every month, on the same date.

Because here's the thing: none of this happens without people who decide to be part of it.

That's the Cadence Crew.

Six bikes need to be right before anyone goes anywhere.

ABC check. Air first. Somebody's rear tire is soft. The conversation shifts to pump it or swap it? Brakes next. Quick squeeze, both hands. Chain... check. I watch the kids go from "I just showed up" to "I know what I'm doing" in about four minutes. That's what's happening right now. Those who know, show.

Water bottles are filling. The temperature is rising. Layers are getting shed. Now I ask the question everybody's been thinking. Southpoint Mall or Maple View Farm?

They're choosing Maple View. Obviously.

The hills don't ask permission they just show up and demand. But the downhills — that's why you climb. Nobody can explain to you how a descent feels after a hard climb. You have to experience it. A good downhill is the joy of being alive for about 45 seconds.

It's our first practice at the start of what looks to be a wonderful season.

This Sunday, Triangle Bikeworks will hold its annual community bike ride for Black History Month.

The best rides aren't just about the route!

Sure, we've rolled through Chapel Hill's Black history landmarks before. Past the sites where communities built themselves brick by brick. Where kids walked to schools that shouldn't have had to be separate. Where neighbors created something that lasted.

But this year might be different.

We're partnering with the Marian Cheek Jackson Center - the folks who've been documenting and preserving these stories since long before we started riding past them. They know things. Streets that mattered. Corners where decisions got made. The kind of details that turn a bike ride into something you remember. When we ride past Weaver Street Market we'll also be able to stop at their Living History from the Rock Wall event.
