We need your help. Army Veteran Roy Edward Litteral is turning 100 years old on 9 Oct. His family is asking for Veterans to stop by and wish him Happy Birthday.

If you can stop by The Houstonia B & B at 25 E Mound St, South Charleston, Ohio at 4:00PM. We want to help the family celebrate this special occasion.

Roy entered the Navy at 17 yrs of age, He forged his mother's name to get into the Navy. After finding out he was not of age, they sent him home.. in 1943, he was drafted into the Army: He was in the Army from 1943 to 1946 and was a tech 5.

Please help celebrate his 100th birthday.

A stark reminder that today, we remember those still Prisoners of War or Missing in Action.

This Table set for one is small, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his oppressors. Remember!

The White Tablecloth draped over the table represents the purity of their response to Our Country's call to arms. Remember!

The Empty Chair depicts an unknown face, representing no specific Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine, but all who are not here. Remember!

The Black Napkin stands for the emptiness these warriors have left in the hearts of their families and friends. Remember!

The single Red Rose reminds us of their families and loved ones. The Red Ribbon represents the love of Our Country, which inspired them to answer the nation's call. Remember!

The Yellow Candle and its Yellow Ribbon symbolize the everlasting hope for a joyous reunion with those yet accounted for. Remember!

The Slices of Lemon on the bread plate remind us of their bitter fate. Remember!

The Salt upon the bread plate represents the tears of their families. Remember!

The W**e Glass turned upside down, reminds us that Our Uniformed American Heroes cannot be with us to drink a toast or join in the festivities of the day. Remember!

Remember! All of you who served with them and called them comrades, who depended upon their might and aid, and relied upon them, for surely, they have not forsaken you. Remember!

After the breakfast, anyone who would like to help with the demolition of 2 old sheds at a Veterans home. We can use all the volunteers possible. No kids please, teenagers over 16 are okay with parents assisting. Please email [email protected] if you can help our need information and the address.

PATRIOT'S PEN WRITTEN ESSAY CONTEST FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Each year, more than 800,600 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen® annual youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1 million in local and national awards. Each first place VFW Department (state) winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000!

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Students interested in participating must submit their essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed 2026-2027 entry form, to their local participating VFW Post. Find your sponsoring local VFW Post as applications must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31.

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY HIGH SCHOOL ORAL ESSAY CONTEST

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy® audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regard to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 28,000 ninth through 12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1.6 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. The complete list of other national scholarships range up to $21,000, with the first-place winner from each VFW Department (state) winning a scholarship of at least $1,000.
Students interested in participating must submit their audio essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed entry form to their local participating VFW Post. Download the 2026-2027 entry form, then find your sponsoring local VFW Post as essays must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31.
