CALLING ALL VETERANS. The monthly Veterans breakfast will be on Saturday, 29 August at 10:00AM at Archers Tavern Kettering , 2030 E. Dorothy Lane, Kettering. Cost is $10.00.

The guest speaker might be from the VA. So waiting for confirmation. If they can't attend, I'll provide information on the VA program to help with quality of life issues in the home. How to request assistance and funds from the VA and the process.

After the breakfast, anyone who would like to help with the demolition of 2 old sheds at a Veterans home. We can use all the volunteers possible. No kids please, teenagers over 16 are okay with parents assisting. Please email [email protected] if you can help our need information and the address.

Help spread the word to any Veteran and their family member. All are invited.

PATRIOT'S PEN WRITTEN ESSAY CONTEST FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

Each year, more than 800,600 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen® annual youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1 million in local and national awards. Each first place VFW Department (state) winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000!

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Students interested in participating must submit their essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed 2026-2027 entry form, to their local participating VFW Post. Find your sponsoring local VFW Post as applications must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31.

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY HIGH SCHOOL ORAL ESSAY CONTEST

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy® audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regard to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 28,000 ninth through 12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1.6 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. The complete list of other national scholarships range up to $21,000, with the first-place winner from each VFW Department (state) winning a scholarship of at least $1,000.
Students interested in participating must submit their audio essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed entry form to their local participating VFW Post. Download the 2026-2027 entry form, then find your sponsoring local VFW Post as essays must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31.
