We are saddened to hear of the passing of Michael Tilson Thomas, a transformative figure in classical music. He was Music Director Laureate of the San Francisco Symphony, Conductor Laureate of the London Symphony Orchestra, and Co-Founder, Artistic Director Laureate of the New World Symphony and Distinguished Professor of Music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

His influence stretches far beyond any one performance or orchestra. For so many listeners and artists, he opened doors into the music in a way that felt welcoming, curious, and full of joy. We’re so grateful for what he gave to the world, and for the countless ways his artistry will continue to echo in concert halls and in our listening.

In recent years, he was open about his battle with cancer, facing it with the same clarity, courage, and grace that defined so much of his life and work. Even through illness, his presence and influence remained deeply felt across the music world. His family, friends and colleagues will be in our deepest thoughts and he will be greatly missed.
