Join us on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 1:00 pm, when we welcome Greg Liverman to present a Case Study: Using Multiple DNA Sites to Investigate a Hidden Ancestral Line.

About This Program:
Not all of your relatives test at the same DNA testing site. Just like we need to be able to use records of different types and from different repositories to prove relationships between one generation and another, we need to be able to combine the evidence from multiple DNA testing sites to establish evidence of relationships.

In this case study we will investigate a series of matches who did not appear to link into Greg’s ancestral lines. Through careful research of his matches on three different autosomal testing sites and combining that evidence into one master tree, it became apparent how these matches were related to him. In the process he gained new insights into a particular matriarchal line that had been frustrating him for a while.

Some of the DNA analysis techniques we will encounter are:
using trees attached to DNA kits,
techniques for identifying the real identity of a match, and
evaluating the amount of DNA to estimate the number of generations to a common ancestor.

Meet Our Speaker:
Greg Liverman, Ph.D., began tracing his family history in the 1990’s with an old Macintosh computer and a copy of Family Tree Maker. At that time, family and career pursuits did not leave much time for genealogy work. He was finally able to return to charting his family history in 2009. Greg quickly realized that he could bring to bear all the analytical and problem-solving skills he had developed in over forty years of working as a journalist, scientist and business manager.

Living on a ranch on the western slopes of Pikes Peak means there are few libraries nearby, so Greg has become adept at using online resources for both domestic and foreign research. He has researched his family history “on the ground” in libraries, cemeteries and records offices in seven states, with more on the list to visit. He has experience in using various techniques, based on the careful application of reason and logic, to successfully break down “brick walls”.

Greg and his wife Wendy added genetic genealogy or DNA testing to their brick wall demolition toolkit in 2013 and have immersed themselves in the details of DNA tests and evaluation methods. They have answered several questions about their family history using DNA evidence.

"The Hallowed Grounds of Jewish Denver - Jewish Cemeteries", with Phil Goodstein!

Location: Zoom and In-Person at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 8545 E Dry Creek Road, Centennial, Colorado, 80112.

Description: From the time of the Pikes Peak gold rush, Jews have been part and parcel of the Mile High City. They have participated in all aspects of the community. Besides business leaders there have been labor agitators. Physicians, musicians, restaurateurs, dreamers, schemers, and scoundrels have all been part of the mix. Phil, author of Denver Jewish Cemeteries, will share his insights into the rich history of Jewish cemeteries. Along with him, we will dive into the fascinating stories and traditions that have shaped these sacred grounds.

Meet Our Speaker: Author Phil Goodstein is a Denver native who is the city’s leading historian. In addition to authoring 30 other books on the community, he has given many walking tours around town. Included have been visits to the cemeteries. He explains that they are places that connect the past with the future, allowing residents a better understanding of the present.

Born of Ireland

Ireland is one of the few countries in the world that has written its emigrants back into the law.
If one of your grandparents was born on the island of Ireland, you are generally entitled to become an Irish citizen, whatever country you were born in and whatever passport you hold now. The route is the Foreign Births Register, a list kept by the state of people claiming citizenship through Irish descent, and once your name is entered on it you are an Irish citizen from that date. Register before your own children are born and the entitlement carries on to them as well.
This is not a small administrative curiosity. It is a country that lost more of its people than almost any other in Europe deciding, deliberately and in writing, that leaving did not end the relationship. The grandchild of a woman who sailed out of Cobh in 1925 is not merely descended from an Irish citizen. She is one. See less

Come help us Celebrate on May 12th!
We are celebrating of the 250th Anniversary of our Country

Members, we invite you to share a 3-minute story about one of your ancestors at the time of the Revolutionary War. You can share either in person or on Zoom, on May 12, 2026. Zoom storytellers are welcomed. If you participate in person, you may bring books, photos or artifacts for the display table. Start thinking about the story you want to share, and how you can stay within the time limit.

​Columbine Genealogy Hospitality will supply the birthday cake. We will have special door prizes on this occasion.
