CEDAR MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY CENTER POTLUCK
Our next potluck will be held June 8, 2026. Our presenter will be Through the Trees, a community-based nonprofit in Brevard whose mission is to bridge the digital divide—one signal, one device, one neighbor at a time—across rural Western North Carolina. The digital divide is the gap between those who have access to reliable internet service, appropriate devices, and the skills to use technology, and those who do not. In WNC, this gap is especially persistent due to mountainous topography and low population density, which make broadband infrastructure difficult and expensive to install and maintain. These geographic challenges are compounded by economic hardship, limited educational opportunity, an aging population, and a shortage of accessible digital skills training—leaving some residents unable to fully participate in school, employment, healthcare, and community life.

Through the Trees serves all segments of the community, including youth and seniors, but our primary focus is supporting low-income households—those most likely to face layered barriers such as unaffordable service, outdated or broken devices, and limited confidence navigating online systems. Without support, families can be cut off from essential needs: completing schoolwork, applying for jobs, accessing telehealth, managing benefits, banking, and communicating with employers, teachers, and healthcare providers.

The potluck starts at 6 p.m. Please bring your dish or dessert to share by 6:15 p.m. so we can start on time at 6:30 pm. Tableware will be available, but feel free to bring your own if you can. Come, enjoy the company of your neighbors and friends, and bring guests if you wish. Everyone is welcome.

MCGAHA CHAPEL SINGALONG
Sing the old songs your great grandparents sang at this cheerful gathering at historic McGaha Chapel on Saturday afternoon, June 6, at 2:30 pm. There will be forty-five minutes of songs about travel, work, love, and heartbreak followed by freshly sliced watermelon outside the Chapel. A brief history of the Chapel and some of its early members will also be shared. A shuttle service will be available at the Robin Hood Center parking lot at Sherwood Forest, beginning at 1:45. Follow the signs posted on Hwy 276 to locate the shuttle service. This event is sponsored by the Transylvania County Historical Society, the Sherwood Forest Friends, and the Cedar Mountain Community.
