The entire Break These Chains family proudly congratulates Mirian Leyba Santana on graduating as a Radiologic Technician from the Instituto de Educación Técnica Vocacional (ITEVO) in Monte Plata.

This achievement is even more remarkable because of the many responsibilities Mirian balances each day. She is a devoted wife and the mother of two children. She also operates her own online retail clothing store and serves as BTC’s Director of Entrepreneurship, coordinating our support for more than 20 entrepreneurs who are working toward greater independence and financial stability.

In addition, Mirian works tirelessly alongside her mother and sisters to develop and maintain their new community garden, further demonstrating her commitment to her family and community.

Mirian exemplifies the qualities of leadership, service, perseverance, and personal growth that we encourage throughout BTC. Her graduation demonstrates what can be accomplished through education, determination, hard work, and a sincere desire to help others.

Asimismo, Mirian trabaja incansablemente junto a su madre y sus hermanas para desarrollar y mantener su nuevo huerto comunitario, demostrando una vez más su compromiso con su familia y su comunidad.

Celebrating Growth in Our BTC Family: Luz Maria Leyba Santana

Today, Break These Chains is proud to celebrate Luz Maria Leyba Santana on completing her one-year Auxiliary Nursing program through the Vocational Technical Institute (ITEVO) and the Ministry of Public Health.

This accomplishment is about much more than receiving a certificate. Luz Maria represents exactly what Break These Chains is about: providing opportunity to people who are determined to use that opportunity to build a better future for themselves and their families.

Luz Maria is a young mother of three who works selling lottery tickets while pursuing her education. She has worked tirelessly alongside her mother and sisters to establish and maintain a family community garden, helping produce food for their family and community.

At the same time, she is raising her children to understand the importance of education, responsibility, hard work, and becoming good citizens.

And through it all, Luz Maria seems to always have a beautiful smile for everyone—and a good heart to match.

Most importantly, she is determined to become an educated, skilled, and independent woman capable of providing a better future for her children.

With assistance from Break These Chains, Luz Maria now has a plot of land of her own. In 2027, BTC plans to build a home there for Luz Maria and her three children. It will represent another major step toward the independence and stability she has worked so hard to achieve.

Luz Maria knows where she wants to go, and she is doing the things necessary to reach her destination. She works. She studies. She cares for her children. She helps her family. She contributes to her community. And when an opportunity is placed before her, she makes the most of it.

BTC does not believe that lasting change comes simply from giving people things. We believe in opening doors through education, entrepreneurship, housing, health, and opportunity—and then supporting people who are willing to walk through those doors.

Luz Maria is walking assertively through them!

Celebrando el crecimiento de nuestra familia BTC: Luz Maria Leyba Santana

Hoy, Break These Chains (BTC) se enorgullece de celebrar a Luz Maria Leyba Santana por haber completado su programa de un año de Auxiliar de Enfermería a través del Instituto Técnico Vocacional (ITEVO) y el Ministerio de Salud Pública.

Este logro representa mucho más que recibir un certificado. Luz Maria representa exactamente lo que significa Break These Chains: brindar oportunidades a personas que están decididas a aprovecharlas para construir un futuro mejor para ellas y sus familias.

Luz Maria es una joven madre de tres hijos que trabaja vendiendo billetes de lotería mientras continúa con su educación. También ha trabajado incansablemente junto a su madre y sus hermanas para establecer y mantener un huerto comunitario familiar, ayudando a producir alimentos para su familia y su comunidad. Al mismo tiempo, está criando a sus hijos para que comprendan la importancia de la educación, la responsabilidad, el trabajo y de convertirse en buenos ciudadanos.

Y a pesar de todas sus responsabilidades, Luz Maria parece tener siempre una hermosa sonrisa para todos, acompañada de un corazón igualmente hermoso.

Sobre todo, está decidida a convertirse en una mujer educada, capacitada e independiente, capaz de proporcionar un futuro mejor para sus hijos.

Con la ayuda de Break These Chains, Luz Maria ahora cuenta con un terreno propio. En 2027, BTC tiene previsto construir allí una casa para Luz Maria y sus tres hijos. Esa casa representará otro gran paso hacia la independencia y la estabilidad por las que ella ha trabajado tan arduamente.

Luz Maria sabe hacia dónde quiere ir y está haciendo todo lo necesario para llegar a su destino. Trabaja. Estudia. Cuida a sus hijos. Ayuda a su familia. Contribuye a su comunidad. Y cuando se le presenta una oportunidad, la aprovecha al máximo.

BTC Recovery Program: Being Proactive About Student Success.

At Break These Chains (BTC), our Education Program is built on a simple principle: we should not wait for a student to fail before we act.

This summer, BTC Director of Education Francisca Perez Guzman demonstrated exactly what that principle looks like in practice.
After identifying several students who had struggled with important academic skills during the previous school year, Francisca took the initiative to develop and implement the BTC Summer Academic Recovery Program.

Rather than waiting for the students to return to school and encounter the same difficulties again, she asked a better question: What can we do now to help these students begin the new school year better prepared to succeed?

Three students—Leslie, Ester, and Yari—were selected to participate. Francisca identified specific areas where additional instruction was needed and developed a program tailored to those needs.

The students met three times each week throughout the summer in small, highly interactive learning sessions.

In Mathematics, the students concentrated particularly on division. Progressive exercises, problem-solving, and practical activities were used so that the students would understand the process rather than simply memorize a procedure.

In Spanish Language Arts, the program concentrated on reading comprehension, correct punctuation, and helping the students communicate their ideas more clearly.

Francisca worked closely with each student, identifying difficulties, reinforcing essential concepts, and gradually increasing the level of the activities as the students progressed.

The objective went well beyond improving grades. The program was designed to help the students recover essential knowledge, strengthen their academic foundations, build confidence, and rediscover their ability to learn and succeed.

At the conclusion of the program, an integrative activity gave the students an opportunity to demonstrate what they had learned. Their progress was also documented through photographs, exercises, student work, and records of the activities completed during the summer.

We are especially proud of Francisca’s initiative and leadership in recognizing a problem and developing a practical solution. This is the kind of proactive thinking we want throughout BTC. Our goal is not simply to respond after difficulties become failures. Whenever possible, we want to identify challenges early, intervene effectively, and give our students the tools they need to succeed.

We also recognize that none of this could have happened without the cooperation of the students' parents. We sincerely thank Luz Maria, Mercedes, and Stefany Felix for entrusting their children to BTC during the summer and supporting their participation in the program. Their willingness to become partners in their children's education was an important part of the program's success.
Education works best when students, parents, teachers, and the community work together.

The BTC Recovery Program represents what we want our Education Program to be: personal, accountable, proactive, and focused on the individual needs of every student we serve.

Sometimes providing opportunity means opening a door. Other times, it means recognizing that a student is struggling and reaching out a hand before that student falls behind.

That is the kind of education we are working to provide at Break These Chains.

Programa de Recuperación Académica de BTC: Un enfoque proactivo hacia el éxito estudiantil.

En Break These Chains (BTC), nuestro programa educativo se basa en un principio sencillo: no debemos esperar a que un estudiante fracase para actuar.

Este verano, la directora de educación de BTC, Francisca Pérez Guzmán, demostró cómo se aplica este principio en la práctica. Tras identificar a varios estudiantes que habían tenido dificultades con competencias académicas clave durante el año escolar anterior, Francisca tomó la iniciativa de desarrollar e implementar el Programa de Recuperación Académica de Verano de BTC.

En lugar de esperar a que los alumnos regresaran a clases y se enfrentaran nuevamente a las mismas dificultades, se planteó una pregunta más constructiva: ¿Qué podemos hacer ahora para ayudar a estos estudiantes a comenzar el nuevo año escolar mejor preparados para alcanzar el éxito?

Se seleccionó a tres estudiantes —Leslie, Ester y Yari— para participar. Francisca identificó las áreas específicas que requerían refuerzo y diseñó un programa adaptado a esas necesidades.

Los estudiantes se reunieron tres veces por semana durante el verano en sesiones de aprendizaje reducidas y altamente interactivas.

En Matemáticas, se centraron especialmente en la división. Se utilizaron ejercicios progresivos, resolución de problemas y actividades prácticas para que los alumnos comprendieran el proceso en lugar de limitarse a memorizar un procedimiento.

En el área de Lengua y Literatura (Español), el programa se enfocó en la comprensión lectora, la puntuación correcta y el desarrollo de la capacidad de los estudiantes para comunicar sus ideas con mayor claridad.

Francisca trabajó estrechamente con cada estudiante, identificando dificultades, reforzando conceptos esenciales y aumentando gradualmente la complejidad de las actividades a medida que avanzaban.

El objetivo iba mucho más allá de mejorar las calificaciones. El programa se diseñó para ayudar a los estudiantes a recuperar conocimientos fundamentales, fortalecer sus bases académicas, ganar confianza y redescubrir su capacidad para aprender y tener éxito.

Al finalizar el programa, una actividad integradora brindó a los estudiantes la oportunidad de demostrar lo aprendido. Asimismo, se documentó su progreso mediante fotografías, ejercicios, trabajos realizados y registros de las actividades llevadas a cabo durante el verano.

Nos sentimos especialmente orgullosos de la iniciativa y el liderazgo de Francisca al identificar un problema y desarrollar una solución práctica. Este es el tipo de mentalidad proactiva que fomentamos en toda la organización BTC. Nuestra meta no es simplemente reaccionar una vez que las dificultades se han convertido en fracasos; siempre que es posible, buscamos identificar los desafíos a tiempo, intervenir eficazmente y proporcionar a nuestros estudiantes las herramientas necesarias para triunfar.

Reconocemos también que nada de esto habría sido posible sin la colaboración de los padres de los estudiantes. Agradecemos sinceramente a Luz María, Mercedes y Stefany Felix por confiar a sus hijos a BTC durante el verano y por apoyar su participación en el programa. Su disposición para colaborar en la educación de sus hijos fue un factor clave para el éxito del programa.
La educación funciona mejor cuando los estudiantes, los padres, los maestros y la comunidad trabajan unidos.

El Programa de Recuperación de BTC refleja la esencia de lo que queremos que sea nuestro programa educativo: un enfoque personal, responsable y proactivo, centrado en las necesidades individuales de cada estudiante al que atendemos.

A veces, brindar oportunidades significa abrir una puerta. Otras veces, implica reconocer que un estudiante atraviesa dificultades y tenderle la mano antes de que se quede atrás.

A Leader, Mother, and Graduate: Honoring Ireidy’s Historic Achievement

Yesterday marked a truly extraordinary personal triumph: Ireidy earned her bachelor's degree in education from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).

Her achievement is the culmination of years of unwavering dedication, steadfast focus, and thousands of hours of hard work. What makes her success even more inspiring is the incredible balance she maintained throughout her studies. While excelling as a student, Ireidy remained a devoted wife to Cristian and a loving mother to Otniel. Meeting the rigorous demands of higher education while caring for her family with grace and devotion is a profound testament to her strength, character, and discipline.

Celebrating Another BTC Success Story!

We are so proud of Yanilis, one of our Break These Chains family members!

Yanilis has recently completed a furniture upholstery and repair training program, where she learned the skills to build and restore sofas, ottomans, chairs, and beds. She recently handcrafted this beautiful bed for her youngest daughter—a wonderful example of her growing talent and dedication.

At Break These Chains, we believe that education creates opportunity, and opportunity changes lives. Our hope is that Yanilis will soon be able to open her own upholstery shop, providing for her family while serving her community with the skills she has worked so hard to develop.

Congratulations, Yanilis! Your perseverance and determination are inspiring. We are excited to watch your dreams become reality.
