Hurricane Island Outward Bound School

Hurricane Island Outward Bound School Sparking lifelong growth in the outdoors since 1964.

We are a non-profit educational organization and expedition school that serves people of all ages and backgrounds through active learning expeditions that inspire character development, self-discovery, and service both in and out of the classroom. The school's programs use wilderness settings as a way for participants to experience adventure and challenge in a way that helps students realize they

can do more than they thought possible. Our experienced staff members can create customized courses for business and professional organizations, schools, and organizations seeking to build more effective teams and unleash the leadership potential of each individual within the organization.

Flip the boat. Trust the team. Rise to the challenge.

The capsize drill is a culmination of everything students have learned throughout their Outward Bound course, and a chance to celebrate their resilience, communication, and teamwork. 🌊💪

Way to go, crew! 💙

One community. Many generations. Endless stories. ❤️

From the 1960s to today, alumni from across the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School family came together this weekend, and the result was pure joy. Thank you to everyone who joined us and shared in this special day.

Here's a first look from our 2026 Annual Celebration event, with more photos and special moments to come this week!

Why choose between the coast and the mountains when Maine offers both?

Our summer Sail & Backpack expeditions gave high school students the chance to experience Maine from two completely different perspectives, sailing among rocky islands and quiet coves before trading life on the water for the forested peaks and trails of the northern Appalachians. Along the way, they learned new skills, adapted to unfamiliar environments, and experienced sides of Maine that few people get to see in a single journey. 🌊🌲

The best photos aren't always the ones we plan for. They're the moments in between.

The first light of sunrise. A hand reaching out to help. Shared discovery. Quiet reflection.

These moments don't just capture the experience, they capture feeling of being there.

Adventure doesn't come with an expiration date, and this group of incredible women, ages 60 and up, is proof of just that.

With duffles shuffled, boats packed, and introductions made, this crew set off yesterday to explore Maine's islands and open waters together.

Over the next few days, they'll sail, row, hike, share stories, and step outside their everyday routines. Some are learning new skills. Some are discovering new places. Chances are, everyone will discover something new about themselves.

A good reminder that you're never too old for a new beginning, a new challenge, or a new adventure. ❤️

Looking back through photos from our recent courses in Costa Rica and Panama and appreciating how much can happen in a few weeks. Different groups, different routes, different stories, but all reminders of the value of slowing down, staying curious, and being open to whatever a journey brings. 🇨🇷🌿🌊

Every expedition starts before the first paddle stroke.

Learning new skills, packing gear, building trust, and preparing for the journey ahead.

Getting ready is half the adventure. 🌊🛶

The Blue Peter is more than a flag.

When a ship in harbor flies the Blue Peter, the nautical flag that represents the letter "P," it signals that the ship is outward bound and preparing to leave the safety of its moorings for the open sea, with all of its unknowns, challenges, and possibilities.

Outward Bound was proudly named after this maritime tradition.

For generations, the Blue Peter has represented a willingness to move beyond certainty and toward discovery.

That spirit remains at the heart of every Outward Bound experience.

How do you carry the meaning of the Blue Peter with you?
