We are a non-profit educational organization and expedition school that serves people of all ages and backgrounds through active learning expeditions that inspire character development, self-discovery, and service both in and out of the classroom. The school's programs use wilderness settings as a way for participants to experience adventure and challenge in a way that helps students realize they

can do more than they thought possible. Our experienced staff members can create customized courses for business and professional organizations, schools, and organizations seeking to build more effective teams and unleash the leadership potential of each individual within the organization.

You’re invited to join us Saturday, August 29th, at Wheeler Bay for a very special Annual General Meeting.

Alumni, families, and friends will gather for a day of reflection, reconnection, and celebration—honoring our founder Peter O. Willauer and the lasting impact of his legacy on this community.

The afternoon & evening will include pulling boat rides and other activities, a Maine lobster bake, time to share stories and connect, and more.

We hope you’ll join us.

The average teenager spends 7–9 hours a day on screens.

Time outdoors can improve focus, resilience, and overall well-being—but too many students don’t have access to those experiences.

At Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, we’re working to change that.

Help make it possible:

There’s something truly special about coming together as one crew.

Our annual All Staff gathering is always a highlight of the year—a time to reconnect, reflect, and realign as a school. It’s our largest in-person touchpoint and a rare and meaningful opportunity to be in one space, sharing stories, learning from one another, and getting grounded for the season ahead. Together, we build consistency across HIOBS, deepen our understanding of each other’s work, and step forward as one giant team (both old & new) ready for the 2026 season.

Seeing everyone together is a powerful reminder of what makes this place so unique. At Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, our staff is the heart of everything we do. Every moment of growth, every memory created, every discovery out in the field begins with them. The strength of our community is what makes the challenge worthwhile and the adventure meaningful.

As we officially kick off the summer season, we’re filled with gratitude and excitement—for the people who make this work possible and the journeys that lie ahead.

Here’s to crew, community, and all the adventures still to come.

Time on the ocean has a way of shifting perspective.

It’s hard not to feel both small and responsible at the same time.

From the coast of Maine to the shores of Costa Rica, we’re reminded that caring for these places isn’t separate from experiencing them—it’s part of it.

Out here, progress is measured a little differently.

It’s in the small moments like learning to read the ocean, listening more closely, and moving at the pace of the day instead of the clock.

It's a reminder that the world is wide, beautiful, and worth paying attention to.

Service is a big part of who we are at Outward Bound—it’s about caring for the places that hold us, showing up for our communities, and looking out for each other.

That spirit continues through our partnership with Open World Learning Community, an expeditionary learning school based in St. Paul, MN. After several years together in Maine, we were excited to welcome OWL students to Costa Rica for our fifth collaboration.

While in Costa Rica, students engaged in meaningful service, built cross-cultural connections, and experienced the power of wild places—including three days rafting the Sarapiquí River.

It’s not just about where students go—it’s about how they show up: with curiosity, care, and a growing sense of responsibility for the world around them. 🌎

We loved welcoming Cornerspring Montessori School students out on the water and coast with us for several daylong programs this May.

From first paddle strokes on flatwater to navigating moving rivers—and wrapping up with a day of adventure and service on Burnt Island—these 12–14 year olds showed up curious, brave, and ready to learn.

Here’s to getting outside, trying new things, and building confidence along the way!

Beneath the surface, reefs hold entire worlds together.

On World Reef Awareness Day, we’re reminded that exploration comes with responsibility—protect what you touch, tread lightly, and carry that care beyond the water.
