I am writing to share an update with our greater chorus community. Our beloved Artistic Director Kim Murphy has stepped down due to health reasons. The Board of Trustees has selected Kim’s former co-director Kathryn Mahan to once again serve as Interim Artistic Director and Conductor for the coming year while a formal search is conducted.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to Kim for everything she has done for us. Please read on for a message from Kathryn.
We invite you to sing with us this fall starting on September 14th. More details are below.
Sincerely,
Anna Jones, Executive Director, Midcoast Community Chorus
Dear MCC Community,
As many of you know, Kim Murphy has been a bright light in Midcoast for decades, teaching generations of high school chorus and theater students, leading community arts efforts, singing and leading church music, and guiding MCC through stellar performances since 2024. Her expansive musical gifts are matched only by her kind heart and great sense of humor. She will remain a beloved member of our chorus community, but her energy is now best focused on her health.
In the face of this unexpected change, I am honored beyond words to step in as Interim Artistic Director and Conductor for this coming year.
For all in our community who sing, we would love to see you at our first rehearsal on September 14th, and we will welcome new singers through September 28th. MCC is a non-auditioned chorus, and the skill levels among singers varies quite a bit - from those who barely read music and haven't sung in a chorus before to those who read music well and have been singing their whole lives. It is this very mix that makes a community chorus a special place, so wherever you are on that spectrum, MCC is for you!
To our many faithful audience members, donors and advertisers, please know that we are deeply committed to continuing Kim's legacy of great programming and choral excellence. The positive impact MCC has in our region continues to expand, and the Board and I will work diligently to ensure this chorus is a force for good, both in building community and advancing the choral arts.
In difficult times, our only recourse is to respond as a community with love. It is in that spirit that we look forward to resuming rehearsals in the fall and producing an outstanding concert in January.
Yours in song,
Kathryn
