We hope everyone’s planning to show a little extra love to our planet in honor of Earth Day next week. It’s fun to see all the events, especially the clean-up efforts, that are happening around this day! Where are YOU planning to lend a hand?!

We’re excited to kick off the 2026 season on Earth Day, Wed., April 22nd at 5:30pm with our pals at and look forward to seeing many familiar faces there! Plus, in the Midcoast, we’re joining the annual Rockland Harborside Clean-Up on Saturday, April 25 from 9:30am-1pm at Harbor Park.

Elsewhere, we’re cheering on friends like with their Vermont clean-up, and their Earth Day festival clean-up, and Detroit-based .cleanup.club and all they’ve got planned this month along the shores of Lake Michigan!

Sometimes clean-ups can feel like drops in buckets, but together, we’re having a major impact! Join the litter-picking revolution wherever you may be!

Hello SC Community, Lexi here. As a preface to our 2024 Annual Report (belatedly landing in inboxes tomorrow), I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my father and his unexpected passing in mid-December. He had a profound impact on Saltwater Classroom and was an incredibly important presence in my life. As Board Treasurer, my dad dedicated countless hours, contributed ideas, raised thoughtful questions, and introduced others to our work. We corresponded almost daily, often about tasks to tackle or connections to make. His absence is deeply felt, but as I begin to find my rhythm again, I’m especially grateful for the compassionate support and encouragement from those around me. I invite you to take a look at our report tomorrow, read a bit about my dad’s influence, and review our milestone accomplishments from 2024. There’s much more to come in pursuit of our vision of accessible ocean education and I thank you for being a part of it.

During our island clean-up stint with this summer, these tags were collected off of all the lobster traps that we found — over 400 of them in total! And these colorful tags tell an interesting story.

Not only do they identify the owner or license holder of the traps, but they also have an issue date as well as geographic information on them. Rozalia team members log all this data to learn more about who is losing traps, how and why it’s happening, and get an idea about how long the traps have been in the water. This information helps inform conversations and legislative efforts to tackle the huge problem of lobster trap ghost gear in the Gulf of Maine.

We’re happy to pitch in and help any chance we get and are eager to grow our collaborations with these clean-up heroes!

Let this be a reminder to not forget about the photo booth until the very end of the party next year!

This season, we’re grateful for the ocean that connects us and the opportunity to share its wonders through education. We honor the Indigenous cultures who have long cared for these waters and continue to inspire stewardship and learning. Together, let’s deepen our connection to the ocean and ensure its future for generations to come. Sending our well wishes to our community near and far… like you!

We’ve wrapped our season for 2024 but are still quite proud of the trashy efforts we’ve built in collaboration with . Please read on!

In Portland this year, we organized 11 community events (plus one corporate clean-up — yeah, we do those! 😁). Through these clean-ups, we engaged 551 volunteers who litter-ally got their hands dirty in a collective effort totaling 1,192 pounds of trash. For our watershed city, removing harmful debris from the streets is critical in preventing it from persisting in the environment and ever reaching the ocean. Plus, we have lots of fun doing it.

Beyond our impact here in Portland, we’ve continued to grow our community, the force behind -project, and further solidify as a project. We even branched out with , a Rockland-based chapter led by , the OG founder of Rubbish.

There’s lots more to come from the dedicated crew behind Rubbish Project and we’re grateful for all the support we’ve received so far. It wouldn’t be possible without our partner hosts, raffle contributors, and most importantly, our litter-picking volunteers. Maine is less trashy because of YOU — thank you! 🙌
