Many of you have reached out to help out with the masks for schoolchildren effort. We are getting ramped up on that and I will send an email tonight with details.

A Food and Drug Administration effort to address a mask shortage has opened the floodgates to Chinese manufacturers selling products of widely varying quality, potentially putting the public at risk and leaving some U.S. states with stockpiles they no longer trust.

Today MCPU made an appearance at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rockland to distribute masks to support the reopening of their soup kitchen! We brought a box of masks, and some kits as well.

As we anticipate the reopening of schools, I am reaching out to local churches and organizations to partner up for a push to make masks for area schoolchildren.

The plan is to deploy 1,500 mask kits to be sewn locally. There is going to be a big need. Masks are like underwear- you need to wash and change them REGULARLY. Especially washable cotton masks that are biodegradable. Subjected to moisture, even the best cotton masks will get funky.

For kids in need who may not already be equipped, we need to make sure they have several masks, so that they can be done with the weekly laundry.

This is going to be a community effort. And there are some technical considerations. For example, many masks will look alike, we need a way to sewn on a name tag, patch, or write on label so all the kids know whose is whose.

This will be an effort to make more masks per week than we have ever done before. We will need more home sewing than we currently have capacity for. If you or your organization can help, please reach out.

Masks work! And that’s why we do what we do. As COVID-19 spreads in parts of the country, it’s important that anyone who wants one is able to get a mask. We are working to make that a reality in this little corner of the country, as we have since March 24 when the factory popped up :)

Face masks are emerging as one of the most powerful weapons to fight the novel coronavirus, with growing evidence that facial coverings help prevent transmission—even if an infected wearer is in close contact with others.
