Folks, As a civilian aircraft, the L-17 Navion-just like the neat L-17 Navion in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas- suffered a highly unusual marketing setback due to the fashion trends of the early 1950s. The fighter-style sliding canopy meant that passengers had to climb over the side of the fuselage to step into the cabin. For women wearing the tightly tailored, popular "peg skirts" of the era, there was absolutely no ladylike way to board the airplane. Rival Beechcraft seized on this design flaw, marketing their Bonanza with an easy-access passenger side door, which severely hurt the Navion's civilian sales numbers. The Navion folks tried to fix the issue by building the Navion Rangemaster, which had door.. Who would have seen that coming? Okay Folks, here's a good one. Have any of you ever heard of the ET-6F? It's a special variable of the T-6 Texan-much like the beautiful SNJ in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-in December 1950, T‑6F airframe 44‑81661 was converted into an experimental testbed with crosswind landing gear, officially designated ET‑6F. The wheels could caster (swivel) sideways under load, allowing the aircraft to touch down while crabbed into a crosswind and then automatically straighten itself. This led to this special landing gear being used on more modern aircraft-the B-52 is a famous example. I haven't been able to find out what ever happened to the ET-6F but I sure would have loved to have seen it. Folks, the people who flew that wonderful C-47 airplane-just like the beautiful C-47 "Texas Zephyr" on display in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-were very courageous. On June 6, 1944, a C-47 piloted by Lieutenant Marvin Emerson of the 437th Troop Carrier Group, was towing a combat glider toward its landing zone in Normandy when it was struck by intense anti-aircraft fire. Shrapnel ruptured the fuel lines, and the rear fuselage exploded into a raging inferno. The fire grew so hot that the aluminum frame began to warp, and the passenger windows literally melted out of their frames. Knowing that cutting the tow line early would drop the glider infantry into the English Channel, Emerson refused to abandon the controls. He flew the blazing, semi-molten aircraft on a single engine until the glider safely reached the French coast. Only after the glider unhooked did the crew crash-land their crumbling, charred C-47 into the surf, miraculously surviving. By the way, Lt.Emerson was born in Austin, Texas. Emerson and his crew were injured, and all received the Purple Heart and Emerson was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
