A little known footnote in history is that Laotian pilots flew the T-6 Texan-very much similar to the beautiful SNJ in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-that were armed with guns and rockets and were briefly flown by allied Laotian and Cambodian pilots that conducted strike and reconnaissance sorties to attack Viet Cong and Pathet Lao targets along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in the first half of the 1960s. Okay, what's the deal with the odd item on the side of this Bell H-13 Helicopter?-just like the fabulous H-13 helicopter on display in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-It is an external airโ€‘intake and filtration unit for the engine. After WWII, a Japanese firm bought two Bell H-13s and added these filtration units to the side of the helicopter. The box filtered incoming air and provided a stable, cool air supply to the carburetor. Pretty neat huh? Come on over to the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF and see their H-13 helicopter. Many of you already know this, but I've had people ask me. Why are some PT-19 trainers-just like the beautifully restored PT-19 in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas- painted silver and some painted with Blue fuselages and yellow wings? Most PT-19s manufactured after May 30, 1942,featured silver fuselages with black anti-glare panels to reduce production time and costs, shifting away from the earlier pre-war blue and yellow training scheme. Folks, when I'm in my yard and the neighbors are grilling, you know what it reminds me of? The food vendor court at the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF's great Bluebonnet Airshow. Burnet has some of the best food vendors in the state and they come together at the Bluebonnet Airshow. My mouth is watering! So make sure you mark your calendars for Saturday, March 20, 2027 for the next Bluebonnet Airshow. The 2026 airshow was terrific but you ain't seen nothing yet, the 2027 show will be even better! You won't believe this one. This is the most famous weird Navion story-just like the Navion in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas- โ€” and itโ€™s real. In 1951, a herd of donkeys stampeded across the Acapulco airport and smashed into a row of parked airplanes. Most of the woodโ€‘andโ€‘fabric aircraft were destroyedโ€ฆbut the allโ€‘metal Navion only got a dent, even though a donkey hit it hard enough to lift the landing gear 10 inches off the ground. This story was so good that Ryanโ€™s PR man issued a press release calling the Navion โ€œJackassโ€‘Proof.โ€ Come on down to the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF and see their pretty Navion and grab a ride in her. Did you know the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas has a cadet program? They sure do. Young folks 13-17 years old can join. The CAF cadet program is a great opportunity for young adults to develop leadership skills, learn more about aviation and our national history. I'll bet you didn't know that the very first person to fly an airplane into a hurricane did so on a bet. His name was Lt. Col. Joseph B. Duckworth, and on July 27, 1943, he flew an AT-6 Texan-just like the beautiful SNJ in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-into a hurricane out of Galveston, Texas in the Gulf of America. The dare came from British pilots training in the US. A few months later he made a second flight into a hurricane but this time with a weather expert on board. Here's one you don't hear much about. The first helicopter to fly over the Alps was a Bell Model 47.-just like the Bell H-13 helicopter on display in the hangar of the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF in Burnet, Texas-On September 21, 1950, a Bell 47D-1 made history as the first helicopter to successfully fly entirely over the Alps, proving that the "bubble canopy" helicopter was far more than just a novelty. Talk about a versatile aircraft! Come on over the Highland Lakes Squadron of the CAF and see their H-13 helicopter. Sit in the cockpit and work the controls. Great place to take a photo of the kids.
