💥New State park Coming to East Texas
EAST TEXAS — A major conservation milestone is underway in East Texas as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) moves forward with plans to create a new state park on Lake Palestine, following the acquisition of a historic 650 acre property in Henderson County.
The land known as, Lake Palestine Ranch, was purchased for $9,995,000 and sits near Chandler, with extensive frontage along the eastern shoreline of Lake Palestine. According to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation, the tract is one of the last large, undeveloped, contiguous parcels remaining on the lake.
TPWD voted on purchasing the proposed park during the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission Meeting on Aug. 19–20, where the agency sought public comment on the acquisition and future development plans. The agenda included formal consideration of the 650 acre purchase and its designation as a new state park.
The Foundation shared that the land’s location, featuring forested acreage, lake access, and natural habitat, makes it an ideal candidate for long term conservation and public recreation.
The ranch had been owned by the Pollard family for more than 80 years. Broker Josh S. Smith, who represented the family in the sale, called the transfer a “huge win for Texas,” noting that TPWD’s stewardship ensures the land will be preserved and accessible to the public for generations.
Smith said he was “extremely proud to have represented the Pollard family… as they transition the ownership to Texas Parks & Wildlife, who will preserve the land & keep it to where people can enjoy it for future generations.” He also credited the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation for its role in facilitating the acquisition.
While formal development plans have not yet been released, the property’s size and waterfront access suggest opportunities for:
• Hiking trails through East Texas forestland
• Fishing and boating access on Lake Palestine
• Camping areas with lakefront views
• Wildlife habitat protection for native species
The project marks one of the most significant state park land acquisitions in East Texas in recent years and reflects TPWD’s ongoing effort to expand outdoor recreation opportunities as the region grows.
TPWD gathered public input before their August meeting, after which commissioners voted on formally approving the acquisition and moving the project into the planning phase.
