We are an active fine arts Guild & Gallery with members representing multiple artisan skills. Buchanan Art Gallery, Inc. was originally founded as Buchanan Arts & Crafts, Inc. in 1963, with Alma Howerts serving as the first President. The first art show was held on the LCRA grounds on August 9, 1963, with the original group of ten artists. The first meeting of the cooperative was in October 1963.
The gallery was incorporated as a 501(c)(3), Texas Non-Profit Corporation, on March 20, 1967. The purpose for which the corporation is organized is to promote and increase the interest of the general public in the arts. The Gallery moved into its current building on Hwy. 29 on June 11, 1967. The mortgage was paid off in 1973 after much hard work and many stew dinners. In 1990, the group purchased the lot west of the Gallery for additional parking. Today, we are an active fine art Guild and Gallery with members representing multiple artisan skills. The members operate the gallery under the direction of a Board of Directors and Officers, which are elected annually by the membership. Board and general meetings are held monthly. Active members voluntarily work an average of twelve days per year. The Buchanan Art Gallery sponsors demos, workshops, classes, and free art lessons to further the interest of the arts in our community. Several fundraisers over the years including bake sales, and ‘game day’, have helped to maintain our facilities, which provides a place for members to gather, share, learn, create, exhibit, and offer their artworks for sale to the public.
