After a little seasonal maintenance, these Bike Smart bikes are ready for another school year.

At the end of the summer, our team fixes all 150 kids bikes in our fleet over a period of 3 days. It's no easy feat, but we get it done with the help of our Trailside Center team, volunteer mechanics, and one very good dog.

Look for the Bike Smart trailers as they make their way out across Vermont, teaching kids statewide to ride safely and with confidence! This is a free program available to schools and camps, thanks to the support of donors like you.

It's like they say, there's no bad weather!

We have to commute in these conditions anyway, so we might as well practice together with our friends and neighbors, and have some fun while we're out there.

Join us for the next EZ Breezy bike ride on Tuesday, August 25 at 6 PM. Meet at the Local Motion Trailside Center. We'll do our best to manifest better weather.

And then keep joining us on the last Tuesday of every month, all year round!

Vermont’s roads are seeing more crashes involving pedestrians, bike and e-bike riders, scooters and other micromobility devices, and e-moto riders. How these crashes get reported shapes how the public understands traffic violence, particularly who’s at risk and who’s responsible.

August 12, 2026. Hundreds of people joined us for an event we never want to host again.

We rode as a critical mass through Burlington to mourn the loss of Shiloh Skalka, to support her family, and to be together as a community.

Christian, Shiloh's dad, spoke these words to the gathered crowd:

"Thank you everyone for coming today to remember Shiloh, especially in this rain. Many of you knew her and what a shining light she was, and for those of you who didn't I can assure you that she was righteous and beautiful. She loved to ride her bike and see the world in motion, and she lived life in a spirit of community and empathy, so this is a really fitting way to honor her.

I also want to acknowledge that we're gathered today to speak out not just for Shiloh but for all riders and walkers in our town and state, whose safety is too often devalued. That a criminal charge was made in Shiloh's case shows, unequivocally, that she was not at fault and did nothing wrong-- yet the person who killed her is still driving, and the charge is a misdemeanor. In the absence of any details or facts from the police and state's attorney, I can't yet say whether this is right. But today's demonstration of solidarity says loudly and clearly to our social and legal infrastructures that lawful riders and walkers have a right to the road, and a legal and moral right to be protected and defended.

In the spirit of solidarity, I'd like to ask everyone to join me in a moment of power-- on the count of 3, please chant Shiloh's name with me 8 times, once for every 2 years of her beautiful life."

Not long ago, streets weren’t for cars. They were for everyone: pedestrians, bicycles, vendors, horses, trams. They were the connective tissue of a city that belonged to everyone.

Then, the car came along.

Jay, a slur for somebody rural and unfamiliar with city life, was turned into jaywalker. The auto industry flooded newspapers with propaganda and sent Boy Scouts into cities to publicly mock people who crossed mid-block.

They wanted to sell the message that the car was not a threat to American life or freedom, but the epitome of it.

By the 1930s, mid-block crossings were illegal in most American cities. Deaths by car had quintupled in 15 years. The freedom of the street that was meant for everybody was given only to cars.

Everyone else was left in the margins.

Love bikes? Work with Local Motion this Fall!

Seeking part time employees to work with us at our busy bike rental shop on the Burlington waterfront. Greet customers, process reservations, fit customers to bikes, give directions, and send them off on their adventures. The job is active and mostly outside.

Shifts are 5-6 hours long, either mornings or afternoons, and our rental shop is open 7 days a week through the end of October. Pay starts at $15-$18 / hour depending on experience.
