August was a good one. šŸ«¶šŸ¼

From camps with Shepherd Center & Empower SCI to being reminded over and over again just how powerful these communities are, this month was full of some pretty special moments.

And now we’re heading into September, SCI Awareness Month, with a whole lot happening, including some big rides. Feeling grateful for where we’ve been and VERY excited for what’s ahead.

🌊 This month’s Active Fund Spotlight is Richard Julian from Honolulu, Hawaii!

Rich has been surfing for more than 25 years and continues to compete on the Adaptive Surfing Professional Tour. After his accident, he found his way back to the ocean and helped create AccesSurf, making the beach and ocean more accessible to people with disabilities.

Now, with support from the Active Fund, Rich is getting a custom waveski to keep doing what he loves.

From surfing and handcycling to advocating for change and raising service dogs, Rich has built a life around staying active and helping others do the same.

There’s something pretty special about watching the things someone works on in therapy translate into real life.

At Empower SCI, participants got to take those skills outside the therapy room and onto the water, using adaptive recreation to build confidence, independence, and connection along the way.

We love seeing programs like this create opportunities for people to experience the outdoors, try something new, and find more ways to do the things they love. Huge thank you to Empower SCI & Gnome Surf for making this possible! 🌊

Congratulations to the 28 ski clubs and nonprofits who were awarded funds through the Kelly Brush Foundation’s Ski Racing Safety Equipment Grants! This year we’re proud to be supporting clubs across the country- from Camden, Maine to Anchorage, Alaska- helping to keep over 10,000 racers safer in venues through the purchase of b-net and other essential equipment.

Want to get involved with Ski Racing Safety programs at your club?

Host a ā€œStop the Bleedā€ Training
Equip your coaches, staff, and parents with life-saving emergency response skills. Hosting a Stop the Bleed course ensures your team is prepared to handle lacerations on and off the hill. KBF can help plan one near you.

Prepare for Next Year’s SRS Grant Cycle
Planning safety upgrades for next season? Keep the 2027 SRS grant cycle on your radar! We are here to help you prepare. Start assessing your venue’s needs now- whether it’s b-netting, tower pads, or additional equipment, so your organization is ready to apply when it opens!

Getting to see Empower SCI Camp in action was such a special experience for our team at KBF.

We spent time with both the teen and adult campers in Rhode Island and got to see something we talk about all the time at KBF: what happens when people have access to recreation, community, and the opportunity to try something new?

We watched campers challenge themselves, cheer each other on, make new friends, learn from one another and of course, have a whole lot of fun along the way!

We’re grateful to Empower SCI for letting us be a small part of camp and for the work they’re doing to create more opportunities for people with a SCI to get out there and live fully.

We can’t wait to see what’s next šŸ’™ :)

We could not make the Kelly Brush Ride the event that it is without the incredible volunteers who show up to help us make it happen.

Our volunteers allow us to provide an awesome rider experience and help the Ride raise funds to support opportunities for people living with spinal cord injury to enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle. And of course they get to join in on the fun of Ride Day!

We’re changing lives through the power of adaptive sports. Every grant, every opportunity, and every milestone is possible because of the generosity of our supporters.

We’re proud to share our 2025 Impact Report, celebrating 20 years of creating opportunities and expanding access to adaptive sports and recreation.
šŸ’™ Together, we’ve achieved:
2,196 Active Fund equipment grants awarded to support people with spinal cord injuries on their active journeys.
382 Try-It-First grants provided
More than 50,000 Adaptive Rec Hub (formerly the Active Project) users supported
26 camps serving 267 participants
188 miles of mountain bike trails assessed
16 rehab facility partnerships
…and so much more!

These aren’t just numbers. They represent barriers broken, confidence built, and countless adventures made possible.
To our donors, volunteers, board members, advisors, partners, and staff: thank you for making this impact possible. Here’s to celebrating how far we’ve come, and looking ahead to all that’s still possible.
