Camp POSTCARD (“Police Officers Striving to Create and Reinforce Dreams”) is a free week-long summer camp for Maine 5th and 6th graders — helping them build relationships, learn life skills, change their perceptions of law enforcement, reduce high school dropout rates, and improve literacy and college acceptance rates. Launched in 1994, the camp is held every June on the grounds of Agassiz Village

in Poland, Maine, and is staffed by volunteer law enforcement and criminal justice professionals, community volunteers, and Volunteers of America personnel. The camp’s Demo Day includes demonstrations of healthy snack making, military equipment, trained police K-9 dogs, wilderness survival skills, karate, fire prevention, a “touch tank” of live marine creatures, an ice cream truck, face painting and more. Fit, Fed & Fun for Life, introduced in 2011 and funded by the National Recreation Foundation, helps fight childhood obesity by encouraging campers to get outdoors for more active recreation and to eat healthier foods. Science Day offers a range of educational science projects for campers, including several “stations” for them to explore and experience in groups. Camp POSTCARD is a long-term partnership among the Maine Sheriffs’ Association, the Maine D.A.R.E.® Officers Association, and Volunteers of America Northern New England. Qualified officers are invited to become volunteer leaders at camp. Contact us for more information. Thanks to community support, there is no charge for any child to attend.
