Through the summer-long Richard G. Rockefeller Internship Program, 11 college students gain work experience in land conservation at Maine’s local land trusts. After a week of training, interns devote nine weeks to hands-on work in the many facets of land conservation. Interns build trails, conduct research, steward conservation easements, engage with the local community, and contribute to communications, membership, and fundraising. At the middle and end of the season, we come together to reconnect, visit a conserved property, share stories and experiences, problem solve and provide input on the program. Here’s what year’s interns had to say about their experiences this summer.

Last month, the Mi’kmaq Nation acquired its largest contiguous landholding yet, advancing a historic movement to return land and its care to Wabanaki Nations. Learn more in this month's Nature Connects, written by Brett Ciccotelli, the tribal land recovery manager for First Light and Shannon Hill, the environmental health director for Mi'kmaq Nation - Aroostook County, Maine. You can find this column (and all our Nature Connects columns) on our website or in the Portland Press Herald.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Elizabeth Erskine, our 2026 Richard G. Rockefeller Conservation Intern, through the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

Elizabeth is originally from Massachusetts and is actively pursuing a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science at the University of New England, set to graduate next May. She spends her time outside, reading, crafting, or learning songs on the banjo. With additional interests in photography and conservation, Elizabeth is thrilled to have the opportunity to spend the summer in Bethel interning with IWT.

We’re thrilled to welcome Lanna Antebi‑Igei as our summer intern!

Matched with RRCT through Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Richard G. Rockefeller Conservation Internship Program, Lanna brings a passion for stewardship, accessibility, and river conservation to the Royal River Watershed.

Previously, Lanna was a part of a Conservation Corps in Plumas County, California, and has worked as a canoe guide in the Minnesota Boundary Waters and Canadian Quetico. Lanna is double-majoring in Geology and Creative Writing at Colby College and hopes to pursue Geomorphology in the future.

In their free time, Lanna can be found competing on their college’s Woodsmen team, navigating rapids from the stern, fishing, painting, and swimming in whatever body of water is most accessible.
