Wow! We can’t believe that everything came together today for the first Brooklyn, Mah Jongg and Egg Cream Social, co-produced with Fern Parker of Rose Hill Mah Jongg. It might have been for only 20 minutes, but the sun actually came out. Our volunteers were amazing, and players came from all over the city, New Jersey, Long Island, and Westchester. These people know how to get their mahj on! Egg creams were drunk. Tours were provided. Ducks were awarded. Raffles were won. Thanks to modernmahjong and Debra Tesch Kriss for donating items for the swag and raffle. It’s called A Brooklyn Dream. A FEVER dream is more like it.

The Brooklyn Pop, in Industry City, is a wild, immersive, powerful jump into the mind of it’s creator, Kaves, both into his family memories of a life lived in the fuggedaboutit-borrough and the pop culture that reflected his world. Now add a performance layer on top of it — filled with Streisand and Jackie Robinson impersonators, a Ralph Kramden, and figures from Kaves family history (often played by the younger generation of his family) — and you are in for a wild 60 or so minutes, tromping past Brooklyn artifacts, entering social club, Sal’s pizzeria, and subway tracks, singing the theme to Welcome Back Kotter, and going on a beautiful emotional journey.

And that journey is FULL of seltzer. During the Robinson segment, watch for an old fashion bottle of ubets chocolate syrup. Then walk the hallway filled with bottles, sourced from the Brooklyn Seltzer Boys, tagged by Kaves with the name of Brooklyn celebrities, watch a young Kaves interact with Ralph Kramden who has a crazy get-rich scheme sourcing seltzer siphons, and finally pass through the old fashion soda shop offering Joyva marshmallow rings and fresh egg creams (made by Kave’s own daughter and former Egg Cream Invitational Contestant).

Mix, sip, and savor the sweet history of the Jewish soda parlor in this hands-on culinary experience with cookbook author, Leah Koenig.

Recipes are drawn from Leah Koenig’s newest cookbook, The Dessert Table: 100 Joyful Jewish Sweets, which will be available for purchase at the event.
