Episode 28: How Will We Teach October 7?

Three years after October 7, many of us can still remember exactly where we were when we first understood what was happening. We remember who we called, what we saw, and how the day unfolded around us.

And only three years later, we are already confronting questions about how October 7 ought to be remembered, commemorated, and taught. So what can earlier experiences teach us about that process?

Spencer Cronin joins Jeremy Burton on Boston Jewish Now to look at what we can learn from the evolution of Holocaust and 9/11 commemoration and education as new generations encounter these events differently than those who experienced them firsthand — and as those with no firsthand memory or relationship to the events become responsible for teaching them.

They discuss how communities develop rituals of remembrance and the challenge of figuring out how to teach traumatic history while its meaning is still being shaped and contested.

And this is the challenge of October 7: the need to explain and teach what happened began almost immediately, even while the memories of that day remained firsthand for so many of us. Teshuvah.

A Jewish word often translated as repentance; its deeper meaning is returning.

Returning to what is right.
Returning to our values.
Returning to truth when fear, hatred, or prejudice pull us away from it.

Sometimes distortion of truth appears as stereotypes, conspiracy theories, the denial or distortion of Jewish history, or treating Jewish people as somehow responsible for the actions of people or governments they have no control over.

Teshuvah challenges us to notice it and stand up for what is right.

For those who encounter antisemitism, teshuvah can mean remembering that we don't need to normalize hatred and lies.

Did you know that a Sukkah can be decorated with fruit?

Hanging branches of grapes and other fruits can be beautiful!

For thousands of years, Jews have celebrated Sukkot by gathering under a simple roof of branches, remembering a journey through the wilderness and giving thanks for the harvest.

There’s something powerful about that tradition today.

Sukkot invites us to celebrate in a temporary shelter.

And the sukkah itself carries a beautiful message: our homes may be temporary, but our traditions, our communities, and our commitment to one another and Jewish values, endure.

This year, let’s make a positive difference. Every act of kindness can go a long way, treat your neighbor how you would like them to treat yourself.
